Hey guys & gals, I've been having some real bad neck pain since yesterday I think it's from using my power chair for a few hours yesterday. The seating/backrest was badly setup so I needed to bring it to my rehab centre to get adjusted properly but I guess it really affected me before I could get it adjusted. I don't normally have neck pain unless I've just worked out/had physio and I don't take any meds for it. I was fused from C5-C7 with titanium hardware so the range of motion in my neck isn't as good as it could be and my neck hurts more now than before my accident. I'll probably put a hot pack on it when I get back home later today. I normally have a massage on Wednesdays but have to miss out this week because of my appointment. Do any of you have neck or back pain and do you have any hardware on your spine? What do you do to prevent/manage it?

I can't imagine what it's like to deal with the harware DJ, my guess is that it sucks. Did someone suggest the heat, i've had better luck with ice. Someone should chime in soon with some better advice than I could give. Take Care, don't be afraid to take a break.
DJ...sleeping on a low firm pillow will help..it will support your neck muscles much better than a soft fluffy one...
Heat (or ice) will help increase blood flow to the area and help relieve stiffness...you could take a mild painkiller just to take the edge off...(you have the paracetamols...!)
Other than that..i wish i was there to give you a massage but also as kilg0retr0ut said..take a break...get some rest until it settles.
kilg0retr0ut, it sucked at first but after a while its gotten better! The range of motion in my neck isn't normal but it is much better than I expected it to be! I have heard that hot or cold packs work but I'm a bit on the chilly side today so I don't think I can handle cold packs Your advice was definitely good and I will take a rest soon.
Lαrα, I don't like using big pillows but the one I use isn't too firm. It's not too soft though so I think it should be good enough. Why don't you fly in tomorrow, I could use a good massage!
I have the same fusion as you and i almost always have pain down to T5. I get pain below that too but only when i'm fatigued. Medication wise, i haven't found anything great. I usually just stretch once in awhile and lay down every few hours if its possible to take pressure off my spine.
What's your massage like? I got a short massage at my local mall and it hurt like hell cause my neck area is so tight. Then again the asian people didn't know anything about my condition so they were treating me like an AB. You go to a rehab masseuse?
I think I'm very lucky, no hardware and no pain, but while I was in rehab i saw lots of pain one poor fella lived on morphine, poor bugger always out of it sleeping, he had a pump thing and he used as needed, i could not imagine what i would be like to live like that. I really don't know how people can do it.
@ admin, I used to have hardware from T11-L3 and it always hurt! I made the mistake of putting ice on it after a chiropractor visit. Not a good idea! As soon as that metal got cold I was in more pain than ever! Thank goodness I got it removed. But yeah, ice on metal, not a good idea lol.

Yeah that's too bad Butiki Thankfully I don't need any kinda crazy drugs to manage my pain and I hope I won't have to in the future.

Ouch, I know now that I shouldn't put any ice on my neck! How come you were able to get the hardware removed? Did you request it or did the hospital say that they were going to remove it?
