I went to my rehab center today to get my yearly bone density scan done. I'm not sure if any of you do it or have done it but I think it's something important that we must all monitor. I have to go back to my rehab center in a couple of weeks to get my scan results but I hope the results are better!
Here's some info on bone density scan.
A bone density test determines if you have osteoporosis — a disease that causes bones to become more fragile and more likely to break.
In the past, osteoporosis could be detected only after you broke a bone. By that time, however, your bones could be quite weak. A bone density test makes it possible to know your risk of breaking bones before the fact.
A bone density test uses X-rays to measure how many grams of calcium and other bone minerals are packed into a segment of bone. The bones that are most commonly tested are located in the spine, hip and forearm.

hello dj thank you i have a low bone density. xray scan the doctor say that is why my hand break verry easy. my wife is giving calcuim and lot of milk !
ridingdirty I'm sorry to hear that! I wish I could have posted this up before you injuring your hand. Be sure to keep up the Calcium and Vitamin D! Hopefully we can prevent something like this from happening to someone else.
angel, thanks for asking! I actually did go back to see the doctor last week about the scan results. Well, they did a scan of my low back (spine), my hips, my femur and tibia bones. The bone density on my lower back has slightly improved and is in the 'normal' range, which is great. My hip bones however have dropped in density and is far from the norm. My femur and tibia bones have slightly increased but is still far from the norm. He told me that I can't let it drop anymore else I risk breaking my bones.
I always have 2 servings or dairy products per day, take my supplements as I should everyday, stand/load bare 2-3 hours per week but still no significant improvement. I don't even drink tea, coffee or pop regularly. Anyways, I'm having 3 servings of dairy now, will try to stand/load bare more and I've been prescribed fosavance that I have to take every week for the next five years.
Hopefully next year there'll be some improvements and no more loss in bone density! Until then, I got to be careful not to break my bones
DJ..this info is great and will be of great use and help for others. I hope everyone reads this and considers bone density and ways to help keep levels up...
Its so good that you keep a check on yours and that it is monitored on a regular basis. I know how pro active you are at keeping yourself as well as possible and to eat healthily not just for general health but also for your immune system, your bladder / bowels and your bone density...
Its unfortunate that you have lost some density in your hip area but i know that you will do your upmost to rectify this now that you know
When I had my accident, they took x-rays of me. And every time I changed nursing homes, they took one of my chest. But it never occurred to me to ask the doctor about how my bone density was looking. I did fall backwards off of the shower chair in a nursing home, with no broken bone. (The equipment came apart.) So, I'm guessing that I'm in pretty good shape. I don't like x-rays.
angel,I looked it up online DJ, Christoph. It is a shot given every 6 months under the skin. It sounds like it is for those with a high risk of bones breaking. They give it to post menopausal women and people being treated for cancer. It was easy to find online and has all of the side effects listed there.
I stand perhaps an hour a day doing dishes and such. I use a nustep machine an hour a day which must offer at least some stress to the legs and hips but is basically a seated activity. I did even more during the years my bones were zipping to empty but without drugs the activities counted for nothing. I will not get another scan until the end of the 3 year useful period that this drug is recommended.
There's no point worrying the matter because there is no more I can do beyond planning to ensure, as best as I can, that I do not end up in any situation that I feel would be... unworthy of my determined character.
There's a bunch... The online reviews are not good. I've put off taking it a year now. He wants to do 2 years on- 2 years off. I am definitely at risk of breakage in my legs (fart-noise) so i'll take it eventually.
