hi everyone, going to have a supra pubic cath, and one of the things that is freaking me out is UTI's so I thought I start up a new thread and see what ppl do to avoid them and what they take to help.....obviously cleaning, changing all that...but things u can take like cranberry juice or vitamin C, drinking lots of water....my doctor said to have lemon juice everyday.
So please list what you do and work's for you....what you avoid eating..somewhere I read spicy food isn't good, and alcohol
Hi whiteangel, I of course wash my hands before I cath, and I also take cranberry tablets, but to be honest I have my doubts about cranberry tablets. I get mine from Independence Australia.
whiteangel, what you've listed so far is a good start. Exercise apparently helps with preventing UTI's. Alcohol, spicy food, tea, coffee & pop are all bad for the bladder. Bacteria feeds off of those so it's best you avoid it if possible.

I've had a suprapubic for 25 yrs. Over the years I've learned to drink plenty of water. Cranberry juice is a major plus. If you can tolerate the taste of apple-cider vinegar, a couple tablespoons daily mixed with water, lemon-juice and honey works well. Grape juice masks the taste better than anything.
Now for the ultimate cure-all I've ever taken is lemon-juice. Along with a UTI here and there, I've had a stage-IV bedsore for a few years now. It just won't heal and I was getting septic quite often. Up until last year< 3 months out of the year in the hospital wasn't uncommon. Now I drink about 1/8 of a cup of lemon juice everyday. No more sepsis and my bladder has been doing great.
