I have just received the news that I am 5 weeks pregnant. I have not been pregnant before. Alot of the research I have done says that some light exercise and a bit of walking is good for the baby seeing as I cannot really get up and do so I was wondering if anyone on here has done this before and could give advice and words of wisdom on the subject. Also I am having more spasms naturally and was wondering if any of you know a way to ease them as well
Congratulations risaj, that's wonderful I don't have any personal pregnancy experience but I once read a really cool article on adaptive yoga during pregnancy. Unfortunately, I can't find it anymore and it might have been in German, but I'll keep looking.

Wow risaj, that is really exciting news! Congratulations!
We have a quadriplegic member on here (nikita) who I know personally who has had a child after her injury. I'll send her a message a see if she has any advice for you! I don't know if you've seen this thread before but you should have a look at it - Parenting with an SCI.

Congrats risaj, I never made any special effort to exercise during pregnancy but I was in school so fairly active in general being out and about, I think light activity like wheeling around is a good idea, I would avoid weights but check with your physiatrist to see what they suggest...spasms could be many factors like weight gain and added pressure in seating or baby positioning. try shifting in chair, pressure relieving or laying down for short periods during day to change position and give your bottom relief...warm shower and mild stretching may help to relax spasms as well. make sure to get seating checked as you enter 2nd/3rd tri-mester to make sure your cushion is providing enough skin protection...check the other info on the pregnancy/parenting section or message me if you have any other questions...good luck!

Hi Nikita, Ive just read your article about parenting with an SCI and found it really interesting, thank you for sharing it. I have had a SCI (T6) for 16 years and am just thinking about perhaps adopting a child (i don't have a partner but also fear being pregnant and giving birth). I wondered if you knew anyone who was a single SCI parent? Im looking for any information on parenting that will help me find the confidence to take this further as i think i would be a good mum, despite being in the wheelchair.

Hello Risaj, Congratulations! Never attempt any exercises without the guidance/advice of your specialist because the risks of getting injured at this time are high. Since you have a spasm, I would recommend you to do aqua therapy during pregnancy time (only if your doctor permits). I did it with the guidance of my physio in Oakville during my pregnancy period. It will help you to get appropriate sleep and to control your pregnancy weight. It will also help you to increase the circulation and to reduce ankle swelling and leg swelling. Try to avoid the intake of alcohol and junk foods. All the best
