I have been having a terrible time with my feet and ankles swelling a lot. And recently my lower legs have been sweeping as well. When swollen, my lower legs feel hard, in other words, not at all flaccid (if that's right word). The swelling always occurs after I've been up in wheelchair for a few hours and is even worse when I'm also wearing shoes, especially if the laces are tied.
I just read that oxycodone can cause all those areas to swell and I am taking it for pain.
Any suggestions on preventing or reducing the swelling? I have spent a day in bed sometimes and the swelling does go down some, but not nearly enough. Also, I have slept on my back with my feet and lower legs propped up. That helps reduce swelling more than just staying in bed.

Swelling is quite common while being chair bound KarenH. I wear a compression stocking everyday and have found that it really helps. I also put my feet ontop of a pillow when I go to bed so that they're elevated which help the blood flow back up my body.
I have selling in my legs and feet quite a bit. I try to keep my legs up at night on the couch and that does help. I watch my salt intake which plays a big role. If it doesn't go down, have your doc send you for an ultra sound of the legs to make sure you don't have any type of blood clots. Its good to have it done on occasion when you have a spinal cord injury. As DJ mentioned, its quite common. I know since I have been getting older I see more swelling later in the day. I am in my fifties. Wish you well.

Interesting you mention the correlation between sodium intake and swelling. I haven't noticed it myself but I'll keep that in my next time I eat something high in sodium!
My doctor is big on watching sodium. She told me it will contribute to bloating, swelling and other ailments in people. The problem is everything you eat is high in sodium. It is really a no win situation for everyone. I was surprised once I started reading labels. It is a learning curve for me. Have a good weekend.

Yeah I use an app called "MyFitnessPal" and I can input the foods I eat and it'll tell me about the nutrition values, etc. I was surprised to see how high in sodium a lot of food are!
Watching sodium is going to be hard for me. I'm a saltaholic! I like the idea of a compression stocking. How long do you wear it, DJ?
Haha I liked salt too but you gotta really try to reduce your consumption of it. Once you get over it, you won't crave it. I've actually started to dislike salty foods. I wear the stocking all day long from before I get out of bed until I get back into bed.
I haven't noticed any swelling but I do experience a feeling as if my legs are super swollen...like they are puffed up and really overinflated and stiff. It seems to occur at the same time my meds start to wear off but before the pain starts.

Hmmm, then I have a problem bigger than salt . . . getting up all day lol. I'm trying to get on a regular sleep schedule; that is going to bed after last cath of night then get up about 8a or 9a. Yea me, I just started bowel program last night. I'm inserting suppository at last cath then bowel stimulation at first cath in morning. I guess it will take awhile to get regulated.

Yeah I'm normally up at 8am and go back to bed around 10pm. Without stockings my legs swell up pretty bad! Wait you put the suppository before you go to bed?!

I've actually have started cooking again. Even before my accident, it had been years since I cooked. My dad has been doing the cooking for many years and he is burned out on it. Plus, he has about 5 recipes he found and liked then didn't bother looking for any new ones. Also, he liked recipes that had a lot of butter in it and other unhealthy stuff. I've only cooked twice so far, mainly because my mom has to help me. I can't reach anything in kitchen.

Cooking is always fun haha. Good to hear that you're cooking again!
My feet and ankles swell KarenH. I try to put my feet up for at least an hour each afternoon, that helps a bit. I wear compression stockings/socks in winter as its way too hot to wear them here in summer, but wearing them definitely helps, and it seems too reduce the constant tingling I have in my lower legs and feet. I also watch my salt intake . Unfortunately I have to wear shoes, being a diabetic type 2, I'm paranoid about my feet.

This is my normal feeling. I do believe its nerve damage.
