I'm looking for advice in purchasing a value priced wheelchair. (note that I didn't say "cheap" wheelchair) I don't know at this time whether I'll be able to walk semi normally even though the quack says I will. I am going to be released from this clinic soon...my funds are running out. I need something to get me about while here in France and to get to the airport and back to Canada. It has to be light as my wife is incapable of doing heavy lifting to get the thing into the trunk of our car. It needs to be reasonably priced as I'm not ready to spend several G quite yet in view of the cost of this clinic and the uncertainty of my condition going forward. I will be able to purchase something more permanent if and when I need it when I'm nearer to my insurer. (I hope) I was looking at this:
Not a bank-breaker at 270 Euro and weighs 14 Kg. Is this heavy for an alloy chair? It seems the lightest in that price range...(for several grand they go down to 3Kg!!)

Could you rent one for now or get a loaner from the hospital? I know if you call in advance the airports will have an attendant w/chair available to you. Most airlines have this little seat thing that helps getting you into you chair, tiny little thing. It's may save you some dollars that insurance may cover back home. Just a thought.
I thought of a loaner...problem is that they're all steel frames and quite heavy. my wife would have trouble hoisting into the trunk of the car when we travel. At the airport the chair would go through as baggage anyway I would imagine and I'd be wheeled or trolleyed by attendants any way as happened with my dad. We go through Amsterdam (geat airpory by the way)...they pick you up at the gate with a golf cart and whisk you away to your connecting flight. Arriving at YVR is the same except they accompany you only as far as the luggage carousel, then you're on your own. You still have to get through customs screening...it's a pain in the sphyncter. I know as I've done this with my dad several times. I haven't looked into rentals but I think that the price would probably be a toss-up in the end. And I'd have to rent one here and have someone rent one in Vancouver for my arrival. 270 Euros = 350 CAD...That's less than a day here at the clinic. The same chairs they have here at the clinic sell for 165 Euros on this same site. Medical related items and meds are dirt-cheap here in France.
Incidentally, Kilgore, I have always been a yoooge fan of Vonnegut's.
I just looked into rentals...here in France locally (I'm in a small town in the south) a steel frame chair rents for 150 Euro for 15 days. In Vancouver a lightweight alloy frame folding chair rents for 200 dollars CAD. It certainly looks like 270 Euros is the better bargain as I'll probably be here a month or so at the least after I'm released from the clinic. Thanks for the idea though as it hadn't really occured to me that I could rent. So much to learn.
I realize that the old adage "you get what you pay for" will apply here as everywhere else. Do you have any tips as I'm thinking, looking at the prices here compared to Canada, that it might be in my interest to get something a bit higher end. I saw that someone was dissing alluminum wheelchairs as not being robust enough but I deffinitely want something light.

I've only had to use a chair for short periods, I'm a semi-walker, so my info. on chairs is limited at best. I was hoping someone with more experience would chime in. If you go higher end I've heard it's important to get fitted correctly. I hope I haven't created more work for you.
Good suggestion on the rental kilg0retr0ut. I don't think I could offer you any better advice hmalbet as I've never needed a different chair when traveling. I'll make a post on our Facebook page to see if anyone has any other suggestions!
