Hello everyone. I just joined this forum... about 7 months ago I was involved in a motorcycle accident. I had a car decided to pull a U-turn right in front of me and I ended up plastered in to the side of the car, shattering my T-3 thru T-10 vertebrate as well as fracturing my C-5 and C-7. This left me with a T-3 Complete injury. Because of this I had to sell my big ol' truck and had to buy a smaller (kind of) new truck. Before the injury, I would be that guy that would volunteer to change my friends brakes or help them figure out what was wrong with their vehicle and fix it for them. I've always grown up a grease monkey and always had a mechanical mindset.
That being said, the desire to keep doing this and modify my new baby hasn't left me. Has anyone seen or heard of a wheelchair or standing frame that can be used to help someone look under the hood of a vehicle or a creeper that can help move and not literally drag your feet? I've had a lot of thoughts and ideas to do this sort of thing but I don't have the resources to really execute any of it... and soon I'll be going back to work and school. If anyone does anything like this I would also feel free to share my ideas. But I thought I would see if anyone has found something that I haven't seen yet online.

Hi nickt , and welcome to the forum. I'm afraid I don't have any advice regarding your request but I'm a petrolhead/gearhead also. I have three vintage british bikes that have suddenly come up for sale. I am a recent (last christmas) CES T12 - S1 with severly limited mobility and I'm still in rehab. I sympathize when you say you don't have the resources...unfortunately I'm finding the issue to be problematic for everything wheelchair related that I've looked into. example: hub motors for wheelchairs=$5-6000.00/pair; hub motors for bicycles=$5-600.00/pair! gloves for wheelchair=$60-70.00; gloves for wieghtlifting=$6-7.00. See a patern here? Bottom line is that we're going to have to create things ourselves if we want to keep thing within a budget. My goal is to motorize wheelchairs under a grand. I have a friend who is my local McGyver who's a genius with all the tools one would need. I would like to assist you and share ideas as I'm sure there will be overlapping techniques and creative methods...the more mind gather the further out of the box we can reach. I will keep you posted of my developements and will eagerly await news from your quest. As I said I'm still in rehab and I have still to get back home to Canada before I can begin wielding monkey wrenches but I am researching all the time. Anything I come up with that might relate with your idea I will pass along (no matter how obscure...you never know what McGyver could come up with.)
You might like this then Hm, my old bike - 1978, one owner from new. I finally had to let it go, as I'm never going to be able to even start it, yet alone ride it again . . .

hobbit, you break my heart...Lovely looking Trumpet. I've got a '67 Norton Commando, a '68 Beesa 441 Victor and a '70 Trumpet 250 Trophy all for sale as I'll never be able to start any of them either. Very depressing to think about...
That's why I got the trike, at least I can still get out & about. Electric start & hand controls.
Actually quads are street legal here...
BTW we used to call those "pie-wagons"...there were a whole bunch that used to be traffic police bikes that went on auction a number of years back in Toronto. Harleys. Kick myslf for not getting one. They were cheap because nobody would be seen dead on one. How times change.
Sorry to hear about the accident. I can understand your frustration completely! Before my injury I was very hands on and was always the go to guy when something wasn't working. The other day we had to replace the battery in one of our vehicles and I was frustrated at not being able to do such a simple task. It's good to see that you're still trying to get back into doing what you love! I can't say I know of any equipment out there that'll assist you but it might be work building if you're really passionate about it. Though the best way to work under a vehicle is with a hoist. It might be work the expense for a small one if you plan on using it a lot.

Here's something I came across on Facebook today which looks quite interesting:
