I can't remember if I posted this before, so I apologize if I did. There is some new information though.
Well, what a mess this has turned into. I go into hospital for a bed sore. I end up getting the sore operated on. In meantime, when doing ct of area, including lungs, they discover fluid around my lungs. No wonder I was having more trouble breathing lately. So, one day they drain the right lung and get 700ml. Next day they operate on the sores, 2 dime-sized, and dig out all the infected tissue. The next day, they drain 500ml fluid from the left lung. Also during the ct, they discovered swollen lymph nodes. So today, I will probably have a biopsy done.
Well, I just haven't had enough time at home with help to reach point of full independence. Now my mom is just to weak to help me anymore. So, I won't be leaving hospital until I have an assisted living facility to go to. I can't believe my disability finally has been approved and now, wherever I go, they are going to take my disability. Then I get a whopping $30 a month allowance. That sucks. I'm going to try to get me retro pay before I get placed and use that to buy a used car. Get the car modified and start driving taxi again for a little income. That kind of job is easy to hide income
Hopefully all the issues have been found and treated though and you can finally get back to focusing on life. A car would be good, especially if you'll be using it as your source of income since that $30 allowance is a joke.
Keep us updated, let us know how it all goes after the biopsy!
On top of all this health crap, I'm completely stressed over other stuff. Out of curiosity, callled bank and reason first disability check didn't go through wad bank, for unknown reasons, closed my checking account. Now I have to wait for paper check. Got letters today that are all confusing and sound like everything is being canceled, medicaid, food stamps, disability, all because of bank. So I have to deal with that. Plus a creditor, in 2013, canceled a debt of $8500 which counted as income, but I never received anything about it. So to top things off, I owe IRS about $1500.
Hi KarenH, please just think positive, things have to get better from here. When I got my injury I had NO income at all for two and a half years, and I have a family with two under 10 year old kids. I lost my car, motor bike and my perfect credit rating was destroyed. But now I'm working we are getting on top of everything. Yes it's not easy but you WILL get there.
I appreciate the sentiment, but I've been hearing that for over 10 years and I'm still waiting for it to get better. So far it has gotten worse (paralyzed).
And I just found out I cant go to assisted living facility because I don't get enough money from disability SSI to supplement Medicaid. So, the only place they found for me is a nursing home at the beach which is about an hour from family and friends. Visits will be few and far between. I'm too young for nursing home with only a curtain to separate me from some old lady talking about cats and listening to Lawrence Welk! I refuse to go there.
I think you've hit rock bottom, fingers crossed this is as bad as it gets. I say you try finding work, get a stable income and then you'll be able to go to an assisted living facility. I know it's a lot easier said than done but I think you can do it!
I was wondering, could you go back to your SCI rehab center and become an out patient since you want to work on becoming independent? Over here, I can go back to my rehab center as an out patient at any time if there are any functional life goals I was to be able to do independently.

Maybe your doctor can write you a prescription for some added rehab. The at the beach location may not be as bad as you have it pictured, have you been there? You may meet someone similar to yourself, and a hour away doesn't seem to far, but I really don't know your situation. I know what helps me is exercise, do you have any exercises your working on?
Actually, I looked the beach place up online and it sounds pretty good and more like a rehab place. If you want to look it up, it is called Avante Villa at Jacksonville Beach Florida.
I'm still stalling going there because I want to get my first and, hopefully, second disability checks first. They will include retroactive pay and will be about $2000 each. Once I get placed somewhere, they keep my checks and just give me $30 a month allowance. So, I'm applying for another form of government insurance and said I want to wait here at hospital for results.
I've neglected my exercise routine. I do plan on getting out of bed more while I'm in hospital. DJ

That sounds good KarenH! Hopefully you get your cheques ASAP and be able to go to that rehab place and move forward.

Yes, I would like to go there until I can transfer anywhere without a slide board. The checks are monthly, so I will get one, dont know about 2nd. I need to apply for expedited retroactive pay today. I think I will try that now.

Well, I tried to go home. I can do a lot for myself. I can dress, transfer between wheelchair and bed with transfer board, prepare my medications for the day, self-cath and I had started bowel management program. My trouble areas are sometimes needing a little help transferring, getting daily living stuff within reach, and still needing bowel help until I master it. Brooks rehab, one of the top 3 rehabs in the USA, was set up for helping me outpatient. I would have been completely capable of being totally independent in a short period of time. Would have had my space at home completed so I could finally take showers.
Instead, my entire family has decided I need 24/7 care in a nursing home. That is only going to make me lose the abilities I have now. The hospital has been searching for 3 weeks for a facility. So I will probably end up in a s***hole place.
But last night I had an idea. Since my family has turned their back on me, I have no reason to stay in this town. I want to move to Montrose, Colorado. I'm going to see if social worker can search for a place there, just until I can get my own place. Rent is cheap there. I lived there for 2 months and had a job I loved at a grocery store. I don't see why I couldn't be a cashier. And management loved me. This idea gives me hope. I was very happy there.
