How entheogenic plants can benefit disabled people
Having worked with disabled people, as well as having read and practiced ethnobotany for almost a decade, I felt the need to write and share this article.
Consider it a newly open door to all of you who goes through life unable to walk or otherwise using your body the way it was supposed to.
Entheogenic plants are plants that have been used since the dawn of man by native people all over the world, in order to achieve spiritual experiences.
These plants have long been mislabeled "hallucinogenic" by western culture, but science have been catching up in recent years, discovering the medicinal
value of so called "magic mushrooms", peyote cactus and ayahuasca among others.
Being confined to a wheelchair due to disability is to be excluded from the basic freedom of movement that many take for granted.
But what if there was a way to explore a vivid inner world of beauty, unrestricted by the limitations of physicality and impairment?
Such a possibility does in fact exist, and has done so since prehistoric times, in the shape of the abovementioned plants.
They provide a sense of travelling with the mind rather than the body, and the discoveries that can be made have an immense
recreational and beneficial value to those who cannot move around freely in regular society with its many obstacles.
Entheogenic plants contain substances that allows for both temporary and long-term neural pathway expansion that can grant the user profound experiences and insights. They come of course also
with the possibility of causing unwanted effects in some people who are unprepared, sensitive and irresponsible - inducing anxiety and dysphoria. While this problem can be easily circumvented
through information, preparation and gradual adaption, cases where people have a negative reaction to these plants is usally used by opponents to argue in favor of banning or keeping these
plants illegal. This approach is unethical as it belittles adult individuals and deprives disabled people the many possibilites entheogenic plants have to offer.
Unless combined inappropriately with certain pharmaceuticals, entheogenic plants are harmless and comes with extraordinary properties to people suffering from physical disabilites. Imagine
journeys into and through vast and lush landscapes, abundant with life and mystery - all while resting peacefully in the comfort of your own bed. Depending your personal belief system and
opinon, what or who you meet and communicate with during these sessions might be anything from gods and goddesses or beings from other dimensions, to your own imagination or constructions made
from your past memories. It matters not, for the fact is that these encounters and journeys are simply put breathtaking, and nothing short of enormously inspiring.
These plants are not drugs - they are therapeutic tools and cultural sacraments that are and should remain available to those who wish immediate relief from spinal cord injuries and other types of disability, if only occasionally and for the moment.
Thank you for reading. This article will likely be expanded upon for a future publication.
