You can find "evidence" for both sides of this issue. Both sides make sensible points. I found that a thinner pillow works best for me, being I rotate from back to both sides repeatedly through the night. When on my side it seems to make sense that I have a pillow to keep my spine aligned. Seems like a trial and error kind of thing, finding what works best for your own personal situation.
