In Florida, several years ago an independent private agency installed my hand controls. I drove many years with no restrictions on my license, then I became concerned about what the ramifications would be if I were ever pulled over. Contacted DMV and the rules are very vague but most likely I would be cited as an unlicensed driver. I scheduled with DMV to redo my drivers test, I was 17 the 1st time, now I'm 65! The examiner was a little in nerved I drove to the facility myself...but we took the test and I passed once again. I'm legal again.
that is a good question, I hope to be able to drive again soon, hopefully in 6 to 12 months time.
Driving gives me the biggest feeling of independence of anything I do. I can do it alone and go anywhere. My favorite thing to do is drive out an hour to this accessible dock, catch a buzz, and do some cane pole fishin.

I have a 2000 Ford E150 4.6L with the Triton V8. Betsy has 144,000 miles on her and drives like a dream. The Triton V8 is one of the best motors Ford ever made and will run for a long time if you keep thhe oil changed like you should. My remote opens the folding power doors, unfolds the lift by Braun and brings it down to the ground. I transfer into a 6 way power seat and have hand controls with a tri-pin on the wheel. I looked for a used van for six months to find one with the equipment I needed. I found it for$12,500 with 79,000 miles on it. My Chevy was getting old so I bought it. It's been running great just put in new brakes, battery, and tires. Buying used is so much more affordable. New vans are $50,000 or more a horrible inestment. I got it at this place who always has wheelchair vans and will deliver anywhere www.summitautoandcycle.com I'll post a picture of it tomorrow. I love it I've been driving 35 years.
I got my first set of hand controls in 1966. I loved them. Because I am a quad I had to have someone load me and my chair and someone on the other end to unload it. I had 3 children after my injury and they were soon able to load the chair for me. When my youngest played baseball we would pick up two young boys whose family had come from Viet Nam. I don't know if they ever realized that I was paralyzed or if their parents realized a quadriplegic was driving their kids around a big city. Driving makes you feel independent.
