Mimm, I don't know what to tell you about the "physical therapy" part of the problem, but for strenghtening the connective tissue, a chiroprator once told me that I needed manganese. He gave me a supplement that had "green buckwheat juice" Here's what I could find online just now.
University of Maryland Medical Center
"...Manganese helps the body form connective tissue, bones, blood clotting factors, and sex hormones. It also plays a role in fat and carbohydrate metabolism, calcium absorption, and blood sugar regulation. Manganese is also necessary for normal brain and nerve function....
...this nutrient is found in whole grains, nuts, and seeds..."

Be careful with chiropractor's, I've had good and bad. The good ones didn't want mess with the injured area, then theres the ones who tell you they can fix it. Those are the ones that believe that lots of cracks are progress. Best to find a friend or someone close to refer you to one.
Mimm, please let us know what exercises your doc recommends. Personally it was strengthening my core muscles that help pull things together. I'd also ask him what he/she thinks about the chiro.
Maybe I should clarify...my injury occurred almost three years ago. The chiropractor who recommended 'green buckwheat juice' to me, to strengthen my connective tissues, gave me this advice decades ago. I have not been to a chiropractor since my SCI injury. I've had two chiropractors in my life whose professional judgment I trusted completely, but who, sadly, are no longer with us.
I have had pain in the left hip and pelvic area since my accident. My chiropractor is very helpful though it is never a permanent fix. A chiropractor skilled with "the activator method" is reliable with SCI. keep in mind there are skilled and unskilled in that profession just as any other. The activator method avoids large twisting movements that could injure fusions. As long as a chiropractor respects and remembers any fused areas as a single vertebra, the method is safe. I have found that the worth of any treatment increases as the relationship with the practitioner matures.
