I would like to share this experience and advice regards access equipment.
To enter my home i can either use the stairs or a car ramp. As the ramp is too steep i had opted to install a ramp lift. It cost over 11,000 euro, Alas from start it has been inundated with problems, As it was under garantee the seller had came to fix it free of charge, I have noted that technicians sent are not qualified and do not have technical know how too. As the garantee has expired the seller has now given me an option to enter a maintenace agreement. On reading it i was shocked at the prices, a simple call out where the so called technican comes and inpects (Just looks at it only) is 60 euro per hour. As the seller is the agent this type of equipment is exclusive to his company. I feel like being caught with my pants down on this one. Being into construction myself i am also angry at myself for not opting to insert a winding passage onto the ramp so i can wheel myself up, plus it is satic with no electonics and will not give me manintenace problems. The physio who inspected my house discarded this option to soon and took the easy way out by advising i install a lift. The lift has not made me independent as it is always with trouble.I had contested and reported to local authorities that is not weather proof as each time it rains i must get someone to cover it up. The seller had given me maufactures data saying it is IP60 good for outside use, facts have proven otherwise. I will not take him to court on 100 euro bills due to rainwater flooding the gear box each time it rains heavily. but again i must be practable. It is much more reliable to have an old fashion ramp than sophisticated electonics. Below is pic of my house ramp and ramp lift
PS Should the winding ramp prove itself i still feel like shooting myself in the head, 11,000 euro down the drain. Plus people usually come to me for construction advice, i was early in injury, my mind screwed up but still i cannot make excuses on what is my own profession.
delboy, is that a small curb there before the driveway ramp? The physio should not have allowed it because it is not fully accessible! Your suggestion might have been the best option because like you said, there's less complications without the electronics. How much are they charging for the maintenance agreement?
i have not modified the ramp, it is left the same as prior injury. there is a 7 inch step from the pavement. the gradient is also too steep for a wheelchair. however i have drawn a design modification which does not need any changes to the structure but a winding wooden passage placed onto the curb and ramp, this will increase the distance travel but minimize the gradient. I have spoken to a structure design lecturer at school if he can do the detailed measurements i can give them to a carpenter. Marine plywood wood painted with anti slip paint looks good. the iron structure you see in pic is the iron from on which the ramp lift travels. As to technical lift practice in malta they are all buisness cowboys. I don't want to be dependent on them for their service as they will rob me blind and use my urgent access needs against me. The contract is , they want 200 euro for two yearly inspections, nothing has been mentioned as to what this is just the word inspection. I was pissed off last time the technician came he was a 18 year old kid who could not even untie the screws to open up the cover, he waited over an hour for a mate to come and help him out and after another two hours trying to find out the problem they said i needed a new battery. this should of been the first thing to check, Funnier still they want to charge me in contract for every hour they spend there too. maybe they should put in bed and lodging too :jerk:
i asked for the blue print of the circuit board but they did not have one too. i have my own multimeter but i cannot access the board myself understand my frustration. They left with the old one and came two days later, saying that they had to contact many suppliers to find a similar size one. This has led to alot of bad blood. the lift was full of trouble when still under garantee. I will also consider modification to building structure too. It is a pity as i built the house myself. we have only been living in it for 5 years yet i had to break up the new bathroom to modify for my needs. I now need other people to do this work for me.anyway yes a modified ramp is a good option.
delboy, they're not just "business cowboys" in Malta, unfortunatly they're like that all over the world. To them, money is money and they don't care who they're screwing over. I'm sorry to hear about all the trouble you're experiencing with the lift, I know how frustrating things like this can be. I hope you get it all sorted and like I said before, your original idea is probably the best.
Yes Dj i hope you people here learn from my experience, many people talk about living comfortably but i define living comfortable as not being dependent on people, services and electronics to live my life. Not always possible do due to injury but as a friend told me, you are a guru in advice where building services are concerned yet for yourself you did not think that after the guarantee expires you are now at the mercy of the lift agent. I also know a man who bought an expensive Volvo car for a cheap price but a simple service cost a bucket full of money. there is only one agent here to service and buy parts. I am now thinking also of the re walk device too after spending such an amount of money what will be the cost to fix it should things go wrong and who can fix it? These things are not shown in marketing leaflets. neither have i ever seen or been told how to enter/exit a car or do toileting with the suit on. sigh more reason i hate being SCI.
Sorry dJ but today is my being a bit negative day so forgive me, once i cheer up i will post something more pleasant to read. i would really like to read something pleasant to change mood maybe that nice lady limpsalot or wavewolf might chime in.
Nothing can spoil a day like regret... Forgive yourself for choices made when you were not well, and correct for the physical needs present. Hope you can collect damages from this "business cowboy"! Yes, DJ is right on when he says it's an international phenomenon.
That sounds like a lot of money for something that is not reliable, is there not someway to make to supplier responsible for his incompetance ? sounds very shonky to me.How do you access your home when the ramp is not working ???
