Does anyone here have any issues with baclofen and raised blood sugar levels? If so, how have you dealt with it?
Peter has just had a blood test that shows that his fasting blood sugar level has spiked into the pre diabetes area. His diet hasn't changed and is "reasonable" - not perfect but no worse than mine (my levels are quite low). He exercises as much as he can within the limits of his mobility issues.
So I looked at the drugs he takes and it appears that one of the possible baclofen side effects is to raise blood sugar levels.
From drugs.com: "Other Medical Problems
The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of baclofen. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:
Type 2 diabetes mellitus—Baclofen may raise blood sugar levels "
They have done another blood test to verify but it looks like we may have to address his diet. We are really hoping that works in case they suggest taking him off baclofen which doesn't bear thinking about!
I have had intrathecal baclofen for many years now with no worries about sugar levels. My levels are 4.5, fasting, which is well within than normal range.

4.5 fasting is pretty good!
I guess peter's newly high level may be nothing to do with the baclofen. It's just that it is a side effect for some people. How can you tell unless you take away the baclofen? - and WE DO NOT WANT THAT!

Rock and hard place. Between the sword and the wall. OK, raise the baclofen level for a day on Pete's day off. Take a bunch and see if the blood sugar level elevates more. A one day test may be useless but it's my only idea.
I step in the water, but the water has moved on...

Thanks Tetra - will give that one some thought, it sounds do able though fraught with problems. Peter is seeing this as yet another knock back when things were improving for him. However we are all been hit hard by the terrible happenings in Manchester where we live. It's left all of finding it hard to feel positive.
I guess we need to address diet and if that works then maybe we will have to stop worry about what is causing it. A diet for pre diabetic glucose levels is not so awful - low carb mostly and as he isn't yet in the diabetic range he could have the occasional treat at weekends. He is slowly losing the extra weight he put on due to his less active lifestyle and (thinking positively) this will speed up the weight loss which is no bad thing.
I was just curious if anyone else had been told that their elevated sugar levels was due to baclofen and how they tackled it.
Update for anyone interested is that Peter's repeat blood test came back with high blood sugars and another marker which means he has now been diagnosed with diabetes. He has been put on more medications to deal with it (he will rattle) and told he must go back on statins (he had a bad reaction to them a couple of years ago). However we are looking on the plus side that although diabetes is a serious condition it may be a wake up call to address the extra weight he has gained since his mobility as been compromised and better eating strategies can only be a good thing. All sugar/biscuits/cake etc has been removed from the house. Feeling Re drugs causing the spike in blood sugars which was my original post - doc says that baclofen and furosamide would spike his blood sugar levels and has probably hastened/contributed but wouldn't be the only issue. I'm looking forward to having my slimline husband back - he was very slim pre SCI and will be again. Less weight will also mean easier movement. Learning all we can online - how did we manage before the internet??
Thanks for responding Mickmac. Are you new to the forum? If so - welcome. Hope you find what you are looking for. We came to the conclusion - with docs/internet input that baclofen and furosomide (which peter also takes) can raise blood sugar levels in some people. However it is not the sole issue.
