I almost put this on Lara's excellent Thread "alternative treatments pain", inspiredsciforum.com/thread/197/alternative-treatments-pain but decided to narrow the field and just talk about L-Ornithine, especially as it relates to headaches that are brought on by ammonia. Whew! If I keep writing like this, I'll finish saying everything I wanted to say, all in my introductory sentence. What I'll do is post a link to what I consider to be a great article. Nay! Not just a great article, but an article that covers some crucial information that no self-respecting 'alternative therapy' expert should be without! inspiredsciforum.com/thread/197/alternative-treatments-pain
Here's what happened to me recently. I had a terrible headache. But it was strange because it focused itself in just one spot at the top of my head. It took me three days to overcome it. I have herbal remedies, but some I seldom need, and when a person is in pain ones "thinking" deteriorates. On about the second day, I realized that my urine smelled strongly of ammonia. Sigh. I'm so glad that some of my brain cells were still fighting for life. I took a series of L-Ornithine capsules, the headache responded,...and I will be re-ordering L-Ornithine soon. I think I know what change in my diet brought on the headache, and I have corrected that mistake, but the L-Ornithine saved me from possibly several more days of suffering whlie waiting for the ammonia to slowly leave my poor brain.
Let me just hit the high points of the article that I want you to read. These are quotes:
1. A healthy liver detoxifies that ammonia, by converting it into urea, which is then removed from the body by way of the urine. But, if the liver is malfunctioning, the ammonia remains unprocessed, and will enter the bloodstream.
2. After the liver has detoxified the ammonia, by turning it into urea, the kidneys are the next step in filtration before it is removed via the urine.
***I'm going to break in here just to say that ammonia can get into the brain, but the brain doesn't know what what to do with it, at which point it yells, "Help!"***
3. ...L-Ornithine is particularly helpful for removing ammonia from the brain, because the brain does not contain the ornithine-related enzyme necessary to render ammonia harmless by changing it into urea.
***And here's my quick resume of some other important points -- yucca, bentonite clay, and chlorophyll can help get rid of ammonia in the body.***
From my perspective, this has been a "public service announcement". I hope it saves one of you out there from experiencing days of agony and wondering 'why'.
