Hi there
A quick question about wheelchairs
Just wondering if anyone has had experience sourcing a wheelchair that actually lies flat for the entire length of the body ( no bending at hips or knees )
3 year old
Length 1.1m ( 3 foot 7 inches )
Weight 16kg ( 35 lb )
At this stage it needs to be a chair that we push, still a long way from needing a motorised self-drive one yet.
We’ve got something that lies almost flat, but now we want to be able to tilt it upwards
We’ve got a Karma Wheelchair with the back tilted flat( 10 degrees but seat packed out to flat ), but it has no tilt up.
Also been looking at the Convaid Rodeo which looks good, but again not enough recline and tilts the wrong way.
We've got a trial K I Mobility, Focus CR which lies flat ( 10 degrees packed out to flat )
It can tilt to 45 degrees, but just in the wrong the wrong way for us.
I.e. When back is upright they tilt backwards 45 degrees.
Because we will have the back lying down flat, we want them to tilt forwards 45 degrees.
I have thought about things like a standing chair or a prone wheelchair adapted so instead of lying face down ( prone ) he is supine ( face up )
But they tend to be more suited for being reasonably stationery or moving on indoor surfaces.
We’re after something that could be taken out on the footpath and around the neighbourhood.
It would need to be able to tilt from flat ( 180 degrees ) and over time we are hoping to tilt him up more ( to maybe 45 degrees ) so he can see around more.
Here in New Zealand, this has been a bit of a first of these conditions combined and has been an unsuccessful trial and error so far ( we've been trying to get something suitable for 13 months now ).
Looking more and more like it would be a bespoke build, but just thought I’d ask.
Many thanks
John
I've attached some pictures to describe what I'm trying to achieve, and a pic of a prone chair & a standing chair that I thought might have been adaptable.
These are the 3 things we want it to be able to do…
1 Recline back to flat
2 Legs lie flat too

3 Tilt up to see
To start he will only be able to tilt 20 degrees max until he gets used to sitting up as he has been lying down for about 2 years.
This looks like it would keep him nice and flat and ( maybe ) tilt back )
Would need better wheels for smooth outside ride though.
Better wheels, but tilts forward/face down and we'd need to him to lie on it

This is our current chair.
Since we have had it so long we have modified the handles so we are not hunching all the time while pushing it.
It shows how we need to keep him flat, but he cannot see much and we want to be able to tilt him forwards ( while keeping him flat ) so he can see more around him and interact with people.
