Firstly to introduce myself to the site. My name is Ted Im a C5/C6 quad as a result of a fall from a balcony in 06.
My Catheter (a Bard Biocath Coated Latex size 18) is getting blocked after 7-10 days & I can’t figure out what I’m doing that might be contributing to it. There seems to be an endless amount of sediment, like today I had bowl care & straight after the bowl was emptied there seemed to be a rush of sediment followed by wetting, so I change it & off it goes again. The old Catheter doesnt look blocked at all so im very confused. I have had a sample sent off to the lab all came back good.
My most recent Ultrasound in 2016 was all good. I would drink 2-3 litres of water a day outside of tea, juice etc. I have had my bloods done recently all good there little low on vitamin D, otherwise good.
My Bowl programme is every 2 days & usually goes well. Is there any links between Catheter blocking & Bowl routine because at times I think maybe I have to much fibre which may cause it to be impacted.
My Diet would be: Breakfast: Porridge with Strawberry & Blueberrys. Lunch: Ham Salad sandwich & Green Tea Dinner: Potatoes with either Lamb, Pork, Salmon & Veg. Tea & Biscuit for a snack
I do smoke 8 cigarettes per day obviously it doesn’t help, but could smoking or my chest contribute to catheter /sediment problems in anyway?
Any suggestions, advice or opinion are welcome because this is really effecting my daily routine & mentally its draining.
Thanks for your reply. I have received our PM some interesting information, anything worth a try now. Im from the Republic of Ireland not too far from the UK. Oh you cant beat Oatmeal AKA porridge
Lol. Nice hearing back from you. I visited the UK and Scotland once, long ago. I didn't make it to Ireland, but of course I've seen the photos. My uncle used to win fiddle contests in Texas playing Irish jigs, so in my imagination, I have a link to your history. Also, my Grandmother was a Stagner. My Dad said we were Irish, but the name Stagner is now (on genelogical sites) supposedly English, not Irish.
You seem to be doing everything right with your diet. Maybe the pork should be eleminated, but who doesn't crave a strip of bacon once in a while?
Ted303- sediment in the bladder is pretty common and links to us being so sedentary. Not joking- that's just a fact. sometimes it is helpful to rinse with saline.
Hi Tetra I know sediment is part of the course, its just frustrating when the Catheter last a week to 10 days with no stand out cause. I have been more less blaming myself like drinking too much tea, bowl pushing on the bladder, being slightly chesty from my 8 cigs a day. If it was possible to know the cause of excessive sediment that causes blocking I think it would much easier to solve, maybe it is just part of the course!

Thanks for your input Tetra very much appreciated
You are in that uncomfortable spot where testing hypotheses requires you to suspend your 'comfort' habits. In my experience, all the things you mention contribute to sediment. Unless I do everything right, I get bladder stones and sediment. Maybe now I would get some anyway but quantity increases a lot when I go against best practice.
Caffeine contributes. Bloating and full bowel contribute. For me, eating certain foods makes my bowels bloated. At those times it is difficult to empty the bladder. The fuller the bowel, the less urine comes out. The longer urine stays in the bladder, the more sediment. Simply having the bowel full, like in the morning before bowel routine, makes it more difficult to empty even though I am a skinny person. Having a gut would make it that much more difficult.
Blaming myself only makes me feel worse, leading to more comfort foods (see bloating). When I manage to set a goal deep in my brain, adhering to best practices leads to feeling much better, with better bladder function, within a few days. Nothing like success to motivate.
I do not know how much you can move around but my own mobility is 'not bad' . Until 18 months ago I went to a gym 3 times a week. Within months of stopping (I moved) I started seeing bladder stones for the first time. Duh. I only recently put that timing together in my poor brain so now I am back to at least doing floor workouts. At first I passed a large load of stones after each session on the floor so I've no doubt simply moving more, and especially laying face down for stretching the abdominal and thoracic cavities, shifted sediment around in the bladder such that a lot of stuff that had been trapped for some time was available to eliminate.
A blocked catheter is the tip of an iceberg for more serious consequences down the road. Lots of sediment makes it easier for infection to lodge in the bladder, and you know what a downhill slide it can be once we start having constant UTIs.
There has been research clearly linking smoking to a decrease in the function of the immune system. Even though you tell yourself "only 8 cigarettes" it still adds to your risk profile. Whatever you decide to do, keep us informed, ok?
Great information on my issues. Its not easy to stop some things that we may enjoy now & then Im sure you would agree? I try to balance things out by having 3 litres of water per day which keep things flowing ok. Its just the last 4 to 5 weeks have been up & down. You have experienced stones too not nice I had stones once about 9 years ago, but "wheels crossed" I havent had them since. I would also be quiet mobile, I would cycle 7 to 10 Km per week, resistant bands & weights 4 Days a week, granted its at home but keeps me fit.
Its funny you mention being skinny because Im quiet skinny myself, that why in the past year I have started eating more trying to put on a little weight. It is possible that I tipped the scales too far & this maybe contributing to an over full bowl, which could in turn contribute to catheter problems would you agree Tetra? I also cut my Catheters when they are removed & they are pure clear, which is confusing they look like new Catheters, any opinion on that one because its confusing? I was expecting grit or sediment at least.
My bloods came back good, a year ago I was told in the rehab hospital here my Kidneys, Bladder, & Liver were all good so I must be doing something right, maybe as you say reconsider my comfort things, be as good as this Lady from Southern California
Thanks Tetra for your opinion & advice its greatly appreciated
Just giving an update on my catheter getting blocked regularly.I had an X Ray done & there was no stones all was good, in a way I would have preferred to find something because my Catheter is still blocking after 20 days I changed it yesterday & it was very hard to take out also had some blood at the tip of the catheter. Right now Im fresh out of ideas of what to do to resolve this head wrecking issue If anyone has any more advice it would be more than welcome. Thanks a Million.
