Has anyone on here installed a stairlift into their home to be able to continue using the upstairs? Wondering if this is a realistic goal or if renovating & staying on the first floor makes more sense.
I have had a stair lift for about 2 years. My main level really had all I needed but I was able to get some work done on my home by the state so I went for it. My laundry room and my glass work shop were in my basement. Never thought doing my own laundry would be so nice. I have a chair I keep off to the side of my steps and can access it pretty easy yet it stays out of the way for others. When winter comes I bring in a lot of my house plants in. I am glad I have it. Found the batteries do not give a warning that they are dying. Mine said it was a battery back up. Yet when the battery died nothing worked. Fortunate that we knew someone who told us how to trouble shoot it before having to call for service. Husband and son changed them out, 2 at 30.00 each. Otherwise I am glad I have it. Keeps me from feeling even more handicapped since I can access my whole house now. Had a ramp off my deck also done, said I really felt I needed another exit out of my home. Minnesota is great on what they will provide. Was told it was one of the best states to be handicapped in. The state allows up to 45k a year in services. Which is then renewed the next year. I had services my first 18 months or so and then went off. Hated having someone checking on me, my life and finances. To many a lift does seem like much but since my life had become somewhat limiting having it was huge to me.
I need things, too. And my house needs repairs. But, just like you, Lavender, I hate having someone constantly checking on me. The system either drowns us in services or else just puts us out to pasture. They haven't figured out how to give "support" that doesn't override our privacy and independence.
