This is a well-known treatment in the spinal unit that treated me. It's known as a "neck roll". New lesions with neck traction (I'm going back to the days before the Halo) always had a neck roll. It makes the neck feel far more comfortable than a pillow and puts the spine in the most natural position.
I got a cervical collar from my chiropractor which I wear some nights when my shoulder and neck pain is acting up. Keeps my neck in good alignment and I feel much better in the morning. I am sure you can find them on Amazon and how to measure your neck online. I do have a cervical pillow but the collar keeps my neck in good alignment all night.
I use a buckwheat filled roll (Bucky from Amazon but same or equivalent should be available anywhere sensible) under my neck at night and I find it way better for neck and shoulder positioning and pain than any pillow has been. It puts my spine in neutral from the top down and my shoulders fall back and stretch out my pecs and open up my chest while I sleep. It's very helpful.
