Sorry I haven't posted much lately but I thought I'd give an update. The past few weeks have been rough, first my wheelchair broke down and took 4 days to get repaired. While I was waiting for my chair to get fixed I got a bladder infection which caused AD to flare up. Just when I thought things where starting to look up alittle I started to have this stabbing pain in my neck right about the level of my injury which the pain gets worse when I move my neck which I do a lot since that's how I drive my chair (head array). I had an appointment with my DR last Wednesday which he referred me to a neurologist, which I see Monday. My DR doesnt believe it's linked to neuropathic pain since it it's right about the level of where my spine is fused. He prescribed a neck brace to help with the pain until Monday but really doesn't help. Has anyone had this issue, particularly anyone with a c spine injury?
Sorry, quadrollin, I don't have anything helpful to offer in terms of advice, but I'm sorry to hear about your latest challenges and hope you're better. Have things improved since your last post?
Olive leaf, powdered and in capsules, is my best idea. It's anti inflammatory. (not the extracts) Googling 'olive leaf for pain' will bring up plenty of reading material.
quadrollin, real sorry to hear that you have been having a rough time lately, isn't it always the case that everything comes all at once! It may be worth having a look at how your posture is in your chair now, our bodies change over time and so does our posture.
If anything neurological is ruled out it may be worth having a check over of how your chair is fitting you and if you need any physio for your neck too. It sounds like you are reliant on neck muscles for many activities and may cause strain. If you lack sensation there, it could be your brains way of telling you that there is a need to pay attention to something that may be going on there.
I guess all roads lead to neuropathic pain one way or another.
How did the appointment go as we are now a week on from your original post?
Sorry for taking a little to post back. So the neurologist ordered an mri just to make sure everything is ok from the surgery after my accident and everything is good. She is convinced that I am over working the muscles that I can still use causing the pain @laramy PT has been doing electronic stimulation and some range of motion exercises which has been helping. Some changes where made to my head array by making it more of a proximity drive and made the side pads closer so I have less head and neck movement. its been three days since I've started the exercises and two days since the adjustment to my chair and it's definitely helping. Small progress is better then no progress. Thanks everyone for the comments and the advice I appreciate it.
Quadrolin, I re-read your first post just now, and as I did so, something that happened to me years ago (before my sci) flashed into my mind. I'd had terrible neck pain. It was so bad that I got my primary care doctor to give me a referral to a neurologist. He was clueless. I suffered several more years before I read a good book and discovered that gallstones could give that excruciating pain in the neck,...yes, a terrible spasm in the neck. I also learned that gallstones can be 'radio lucent', that is, they may not be calcified and hence won't show up on x-rays. I know that you are a quad, and that this pain is 'right about the level of' your injury. But I just wanted to alert you to this possibility of gallstones, because they could cause that stabbing pain at exactly that location, yet be completely unrelated to your neck injury.
Please private message me if you want me to tell you how I got rid of my neck pain which was caused by gallstones.
Good to hear that there is some progress and as you say, better than none. Overworking muscles that we have remaining, can be such an issue, its a bi-product of SCI unfortunately but keep your spirits up.
