I am hearing impaired. I will be receiving my first ever hearing aids on Thursday from BELTONE. I was convinced by my wife that I needed to be checked out for hearing loss a few years ago. I went to a free screening at that time and was told my hearing loss was significant. I being a stubborn old fool didn't think it was that bad, so it never went any further at the time. And besides that listening to the locusts in the dead of winter was pretty cool. (I said I was an old fool didn't I). Well my wife made me go to an ENT a few months ago and sure enough my hearing had went from bad to worse. The ENT told me that my hearing was to a point that if I had waited much longer my hearing would have been gone completely. Just a few years ago I had lost most of the higher pitched sounds, this time around the high pitched and low pitched sounds were almost gone. I guess it's true what they say,"there's no fool like an old fool". To my wife, thank you honey.

You will find it a strain to adjust to the devices but it's important to use them as much as you can. Your brain will have lost a lot of language processing capability and the only way to rebuild it is to listen to people talk. Spend a year just listening to that wife of yours. She will be delighted.

Thank you for the advice. It shouldn't be a problem listening to her, she's a lot like my mother was I'm lucky to get a word in edge wise, lol. And on that note, my mother taught me that we were given two eyes ,two ears , and only one mouth. So we should look ,listen , and learn and only speak when we have something good to say. Thank again.
This is off-topic, TJ, which Mayo are you being referred to?
I am going to the Spinal Clinic in Rochester . I sent them my X-rays and MRI and one of their Dr's called an offered me an application and an analysis .

Thats where I went TJ. This place is incredible. I stayed at the Kahler Grand, it's right across the street from Mayo, and has tunnels that go directly into the lobby. The only negative is that it's carpeted, which makes for some tough wheeling. It was worth it for me because it was so close. I think the Kahler is the most affordable, there are others that connect. I'm happy for you, if anything can be done to help, you'll find it there.

Thank you for your knowledge of where to stay. And for your kind words of encouragement . Tim (TJ).

An update , I received my first hearing aids last Thursday the8th of December . I have been wearing them every waking hour since. I never knew how much I had been missing . The hardest thing to get used to seems to be the smallest sounds . For example ; hearing water running in the sink, paper crumpled up,my phone ringing in the other room and me looking for it next to me because it is louder in the other room than I have ever heard it next to me before,I do still hear my locusts as before but now only when I take out my hearing aids . Just some of the most profound things have I put in this update. I know now how bad my hearing really is..
I surely will, And thank you.Im excited and a bit apprehensive about it, considering that I will be having another myelogram. I have read { that a myelogram} however its spelled may be a cause of the arachnoiditus that I have. I have had many spinal taps and also mylograms. But Mayo Spinal clinic is supposed to be the best in the country. I am supposed to be up there Feb 14,15,and 16. Again I thank you. The last 3 spinal taps were for pain management and they drilled a hole each time in my tailbone to do the injections. This like all mylograms was not a pleasant experience.
I'm really pleased to hear you took the plunge TJ, also that it has worked out so well for you, just make sure you keep visiting your audiologist every few months to have the aids mapped correctly for you.
