Boy, I wish I could go back to the old apparelyzed archives for stuff like this...
So I had my SP tube moved 5 days ago. The doc put me on Keflex post op as preventative. Have been doing great for the most part, but I suddenly started spiking a pretty good fever yesterday. Started with that bone deep chill, so I bundled up and took tylenol. Started sweating buckets shortly after, so I stripped back down but still kept sweating for a good 90 minutes. Both the old and new port sites look great, no spasms to indicate pain, no headache, stuffy nose, no other symptoms at all. Went to the ER last night as directed by the urologist, and they couldn't find a source. Blood work good, etc. They pumped 1 mg of Rocephin in by IV and sent me home. I kept up the chill/sweat cycle all nite.
I've never had AD, but am starting to wonder if that's the issue. nothing I read states fever as a symptom, tho? I've also been doing some reading on neurogenic fevers that sounds familiar.I
One last thought - still have the fever today, but I called back to the ER and they don't want me back. Said they checked everything last night, and have no more suggestions. This hospital is NOT SCI experienced, but it's the only local option my insurance will cover.
cornfedup- Like you I do not remember mention of fever with AD. Ever. This could be a case where App... would not have helped. How high does your temp go?
I'm really sorry you feel sick.
I step in the water, but the water has moved on...
I tend to be in agreement with ladylimpsalot and tetra about it being AD or maybe urological. The symptoms you present are identical to what I experience when I get a pretty good UTI (fever, chills, not to mention soreness and fatigue), and I've had a heap of em too. Ever give the thought it may be a kidney stone? Not trying to dismiss your AD theory..., but I have a period of Autonomic Dysreflexia almost weekly. It's usually an indicator that I need find the throne. Once I'm done, the AD is done as well. Yet I don't think I've ever had fever accompany my dysreflexia.
Is your urologist one who specializes in Neurogenic Bladder? Reason I ask is that I had a urologist, just a general urologist for years (like 30 years) before he finally referred me to one who specializes in just that, a neurogenic bladder (you know..., like SCI patients typically have).
Perhaps you may want to inquire about that, if he/she is not familiar in that area. Certainly hope you find the cause.
Do you have any swollen glands or lymph nodes? (A recent scan found that I have some of those in the front and the back of my neck, so they are on my mind right now.)
I like a good puzzle. You say you have a fever but you don’t tell us what your temperature is. Do you have a thermometer? If you do, then take your temperature and that will tell you for sure whether it is high or not. The same applies to autonomic dysreflexia. Do you have a blood pressure gauge? If you are concerned about dysreflexia then you need to go out and buy a gauge. This is the definitive way of testing for dysreflexia, the fact that your BP will be much higher than it should be. I’m talking about a systolic of over 160 and a diastolic of more than 90. You may need to take medication if it goes higher than this. Typical blood pressure for people with autonomic dysreflexia is in excess of 200/100. The symptoms you are exhibiting could be the result of a kidney stone. Without having a thermometer you won’t know if you have a urine infection. However, if you are spasming, feeling sick or having a headache (which you say you don’t), then it’s possible you have an infection brewing. I know my urine goes quite hazy when I have an infection. Check it out in a glass bottle or glass jar. Something is obviously irritating you. And I don’t mean making you angry. Something is causing your body to react in a negative way and you need to find out what it is. Time to start buying some essential medical equipment, like a thermometer, blood pressure gauge and maybe even an oxygen saturation gauge (slip it on your finger and it gives you your heart rate and oxygen blood saturation). Anyway, good luck for the future but why rely on luck when you can check your body out with the right instruments.
Thanks for all your responses! My temp ranges btwn 99 and 102. My normal is 96-97 so it's a good bump. Thankfully, the urologist who did this surgery is newish to me and IS a specialist in neurogenesis bladder. I'm so happy to finally have found him. He did run a series of CT scans recently to rule out stones, and I'm clean. I always monitor my stats regularly, and my BP, pulse, and O2 have been good. Urine is crystal clear, also.
So thanks to all of you, I guess I can rule out the AD suspicion. I thought I had read a discussion about it on App, but if Tetra doesn't remember it, I must be confused. I'll be calling the uro tomorrow, and I'm sure he'll start me on another round of iv antibiotics. He does not mess around with me, thankfully.
Yes, maybe. I don't have a suprapubic (SP) tube, so please help me visualize,...when they "moved" your SP tube, did they poke a new hole in your tummy or did they poke a new hole in your bladder? Or is there some other way that they "moved" it that I haven't thought of?
Alternative therapy-wise, please take some L-Ornithine for possible ammonia in the brain, i.e., causes headache. I would take L-lysine for the earache. Golden Seal, Colloidal Silver, Echinacea, Yogurt, Vitamin C, are other online suggestions, if you happen to have them on hand. Are you getting any whiff of that ammonia smell that comes with UTI? Bacteria make ammonia, so that smell means a UTI is present.
I'm back on this thread, one more time, to speak on L-Ornithine. I don't know for sure what I did wrong, but I've had a painful condition in both my kidneys for almost a week. All my kidney herbs (marshmallow root, gravel root, and hydrangea root) that used to cure me in a day, two, or at most three days, have only helped me "tread water", with very slow improvement. Then today, I realized that I could be taking a lot more L-Ornithine-- like 6 or 8 capsules during the day. When I did this, within hours, my terrible backpain through the kidney area was almost gone,...and I am not in pain right now. Apparently, it was an accumulation of ammonia causing the agony. And the ammonia is formed by bacteria---ammonia is the "pee" of the bacteria. So, there's still something wrong with my kidneys, but eliminating the ammonia has given me my life back. I don't have an aide right now, so I really need to be able to roll around, pick things up, transfer, cook, and change my diapers on-my-own. If you have any urinary tract problem at all, I highly recommend ordering L-Ornithing and keeping it on hand. I keep mine on my crowded bedside table.
P.S. I break open the L-Ornithine capsule and dump the powder into a cup, then add water, stir, and drink. L-Ornithine can be purchased 'loose' rather than in capsules, and that's how I intend to order it next time.
People should be cautious about using supplements, especially lesser known, or less widely distributed supps. Researching a supplement on-line is not at all equivalent to the kind of research snd sharing that goes into the education of practitioners who can afford the yearly conferences, networking that shares reputations of those doing research, and the like.
L-Ornithine is not a supplement recommend for most people. It is most often used for those who are preparing to do a deep liver cleanse. It supports the liver more than the kidneys. It can often create toxicity instead of support! It is not good for anyone with kidney "challenges".
L-Ornithine releases growth hormone for fat metabolism, thus, folks erroneously may think it's good for weight loss (speeds fat metabolism). It sometimes screws up the pituitary and liver! it's not generally associated with the kidneys, but since it can sometimes relax ducts, valves, openings of organs in general, thus, kidney stones may pass more easily. Still, there are a lot of considerations in taking it.
The only time I was ever advise to take this supplement was for it's use in opening organ ducts. After a full month program to kill parasites then cleanse and tone the liver one took several doses of L-ornithine before the big flush.
Always be cautious about advice we a)give ourselves, b) get from friends, and c) take from the internet. It is difficult to know enough.
