Finally, some Texas Medical Marijuana is in-the-making. It sound like the man giving the interview was not at all pleased with a previous write-up on the subject. This medical marijuana will be formulated especially for people with epilepsy, which is apparently Texas' only legal use for marijuana at this time. www.houstonpress.com/news/an-interview-with-one-of-texass-first-medical-marijuana-companies-9986388 Nov. 27, 2017 "Qualifying patients in Texas will soon be able to get low-THC cannabis-based medicines."
Good. I hope the Texas legislature gets reasonable and expands the definition of compassionate medical use soon, as well as allowing edibles. I know two families who left Texas to be able to take care of their kids, and they are really homesick for their extended families and friends.
As far as the article goes (thank you for the links, btw) FWIW, there are already multiple low-THC, high-CBD strains being actively cultivated all over the country. They won’t have to hybridize - they can buy seeds or clones from legal growers all over the place. That said, what gets important with those strains is the terpene ratios, which means gas chromatography, which is expensive. They’re going to have to get into edibles, I would think, because most of the research into intractable and/or refractory epilepsy has been done with kids, who are by and large not so much with the smoking and/or vaping. And Phoenix Tears, while super effective smells and tastes like heck.
Hi Everyone, Great news for people in Texas. I think Ireland is a long way behind with regards to medical marijuana.
What exactly are the Pros & Cons of medical marijuana for the Spinal Injury population? We all hear about the mental side effect of marijuana use or misuse. My opinion would be if the benefits out weigh the negative its worth a go

pros: relieves muscle spasticity and tension for those with spinal cord injury, sleeping is problematic with bladder issues that many with sci's deal with so cannabis helps promote sleep, with me personally my life is so much better using cannabis, prior to cannabis avg 3 hrs sleep per day, since using avg 6 hrs sleep now.
cons: for I, there is no negative to using cannabis, except cost, spend approx., $130/month on cannabis, well worth the cost imho.

Hi Some great points guys & Ladies. The Pros far outweigh the cons then in your case Sam, $130 maybe a small price to pay depending side effect without. Thats some difference in the sleep routine, 3 & half hours Id be like a Zombie all day (zzz)I have smoked few joints in my time mistakenly with tobacco.I think smoking it pure maybe the healthiest or vaping maybe not sure.
Do you think it may relax the bladder & slow down the flow (in my case a supra pubic catheter)thus maybe retaining more urine & building up bacteria?
Ladylimpsalot another good point looking at the practical side & I guess the side effects of both marijuana & prescription tablets are far different.
I suffer from 24hr a day neuro pain. Do have some pride in not taking a single pill or any medication for all SCI conditions excluding the bladder botox injections i take every 8 months to prevent leaks. Guess mind is now conditioned to tolerate pain. if only there were a medication that would relieve me of payment arguments with building contractors. A Ricin weed plant i could shove down their greedy throats would do fine.
I think that one of the big challenges of MMJ is that what works for folks - strain, indica vs sativa, formulation, method of intake, CBD vs THC, terpene ratios, carboxylated vs decarboxylated, oil/wax/shatter vs tinctures, smoking vs vaping vs edibles - is highly individualistic, as are the side effects, and different people have different tolerances for various side effects. You have to really do your own research and have the resources - internally, financially and in the community - for MMJ to be successful for YOU and to have credibility when you have the inevitable conversations with western medicine providers, many of whom have their own preconceptions and fears and expectations. You also have to be able to define what successful treatment is for yourself, which a surprising number of people struggle with.
I am very fortunate to live in a state where the research underlying the epilepsy protocols was done and where high levels of disclosure by vendors are pretty standard. It’s not unusual for HHC providers to advise folks to look into edibles, and for folks to have been on Phoenix Tears for 5+ years here, and it’s widely used in hospice settings. It means there’s a large educated consumer, supplier and healthcare provider pool, and so there are a lot of resources to tap into.

I am not a doctor or nurse but I would say probably not regarding the bladder question, I vape mostly and for me the best way to dispense in correct dosages is vaping an indica strain of vape oil. I also take 100 mg/day of dantrolene, which does very little for me, probably will stop soon since not good for liver.

Hi All Great points made above its a good debate. Vaping does seem to be the healthiest way to medicate & as you said Sam the consequences on the liver from prescription meds may be far greater the the vape/puff. I have alot of bladder spasm which at times contribute to AD so maybe some vaping can calm down the bladder spams.

In my state weed is not legal, yet. It will take awhile as there is an idiot conservative in the gov's office. But it is easily available and the police have kids dying from heroin od's to be concerned with. Weed helps me with the spasticity as mentioned already but it helps me with stomach spasms (bladder), leg spasms, it has an enormous calming effect. One minute I'll be stressed over something and then after a couple puffs it just rolls off my back. It is a great stress and anxiety reliever, it helps me with a nauseous stomach, it makes my appetite stronger, I sleep like a rock minutes after hitting the pillow. What a glorious drug. I dont have any other meds outside a uti preventative. My doc has offered to get me on a baclofen pump for spasms, vicodin for shoulder pain, several options for mood, whatever I ask for he would prescribe it because he is compensated for doing it. All are habit forming too. No thanks. I'll stick with my weed.
I only mentioned the biggest benefits of cannabis to me, there are many other good things about it. it is a mood enhancer which keeps me off of anti-depression drugs and it does make me laugh a bit more and don't we all need that.
You mention "anti-depression", Sam. Tonight on my local news, there was a segment on using marijuana for post-traumatic stress disorder. www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/marijuana-may-hold-promise-treating-veterans-ptsd-n824956 What amazes me is that there has never been an FDA-approved clinical trial of this kind before. No wonder legalization has taken so long, and this herb has been so long vilified.
NIGHTLY NEWS NOV 30 2017, 4:11 PM ET Marijuana may hold promise in treating veterans with PTSD "...Near Phoenix, Dr. Sue Sisley is now running the first FDA-approved clinical trial of its kind to see whether marijuana is effective in treating PTSD. “I think we're desperately seeking new treatments for PTSD,” she said. "Our hypothesis is that we believe cannabis will reduce the severity of the PTSD symptoms. But we don't know that … it needs to be tested.” The trial, funded by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and sponsored by California-based MAPS, an organization that promotes research into psychedelic drugs for medical benefit, is looking at the safety and efficacy of four strains of smoked marijuana to manage treatment-resistant PTSD symptoms in military veterans."
Softballdad, you mention the list of drugs that doctors would be overjoyed to prescribe for you. Here's a line from the above article. " At one point, he was prescribed 14 different drugs."
