I am a male C5/C6 Incomplete quad with a suprapubic catheter. My SCI was incurred in an auto accident in 2000. I'm not sure my question belongs in this area of the Forum but other areas seem less appropriate. Ever since my injury, I have not knowingly had an ejaculation. I assumed it was because nothing worked below my waste but recently I read about Retrograde Ejaculation. "Retrograde ejaculation is the process whereby the semen is passed in a retrograde fashion into the bladder as opposed to out the urethra". One of the potential causes is "... neurologic (due to disorders that interfere with the ability of the bladder neck to close during emission...". I know I have more sediment in my urine after being sexually aroused. Is retrograde ejaculation a concern for SCI quads?
ptarga87,I don't think that retrograde ejaculation is a particular health concern as such but is a concern in regards to fertility and the pleasure of enjoying the full experience of orgasm.
If you are 'feeling' an orgasm but there is no ejaculation it may be likely that you are experiencing a 'dry orgasm' and you may notice that your urine is cloudy afterwards.
Normally a muscle shuts off so that sperm does not enter the bladder but this is the same muscle that closes to keep urine in the bladder too and there is a high probability that the nerves are affected here below injury level.
Just to add, medication can add to the issue so have a chat with your doctor with regards to this and also discuss the issue with him/her because my understanding is based upon reading that I did some time ago.
hello to you all. This is an interesting post. I recently had hazy urine. Thinking that I may have an infection brewing, I sent a sample off for analysis. When I spoke to my GP a few days later he told me there were no bugs in my urine but there was some semen. I was quite surprised. I know semen has been incubating in my testicles since I was injured, but it's the first time I have ever known it to discharge back into the bladder. Quite amazing.
I get that sometimes, hasn't caused me any problems, although I haven't really been able to "feel" an ejaculation since my injury; not too worried about the fertility issue at my age either
only concern is that it could cause UTI. this has been happening to me since 2001 and i can now sometime control my ejaculation so it goes to the bladder
Yes, retrograde ejaculation is something that commonly happens to males with spinal cord injury. I don't think it's a concern unless you're trying to have kids. But even then, having a retrograde ejaculation may happen a few times but it doesn't mean you can't have regular ejaculation.
It’s normal for AB’s as well. If your in full stride (as it were) and get interrupted. The seamen that’s lining up in the launch bay is flushed into your blabber instead. Otherwise the little fellows would fall asleep and be no could for round two..
I am a SCI and I've experienced RGE (RetroGrade Ejaculation) if I have had an ejaculation, for the past 5 years. My urologist told me it is not something to worry about and I have not had any UTIs related to it. There are medications to "fix" it; however, as with any other "fix" it comes with a steep price tag.
