DJ's thread regarding what adaptive device do you wish there was set me thinking on this subject and as per usual I end up pondering on other issues.
I can understand why research related to SCI often sets its focus on adapted living and devices that support assisted living because whilst we are not on the verge of any certain cure of SCI then we must look ahead to what makes our life easier and more manageable.
With this in mind I wondered if there would be a device designed that worked as a sensor for the brain, alerting it to developing issues in the body. For example, if my bladder is full, my toes do odd things and my ankle spasms, problem is that getting to know your body takes time and comes from experience, In some cases this can be an immediate health risk in itself. Knowing our own body is not a safe and reliable resource but its the best one that we have but what if a hand held device could be scanned over the body and look for 'hot spots' and bleeped when it finds them.
For example, a full bladder or a potential skin pressure issue, blood pressure increasing or the bowels being full or impacting. I imagine it is expecting too much from technology but who knows in the future.
In the meantime, maybe the best solution is to keep a daily journal and be vigilant of changes, have regular health checks and have carry out your own daily observations with your nurse or family member.
That's a great idea Lαrα! We're always so focused on looking for ways to adapt to our situation that we overlook important things like this. I'll definitely add this suggestion to out list!
