Hello,
I’m an incomplete SCI of C5. I’m pretty mobile considering my injury. I was left with muscle spasticity in my right leg. I’ve had my Bacolfen Pump for 5 years and it has helped manage my spasticity pretty good. I do take oral as needed but very rare that I do have to take it. I just had a ulnar nerve release done this past week and I had an allergic reaction to surgical prep. My muscle spasticity has increased and that’s the only thing I can figure out that can attribute to the reason. I’m pretty good at listening to my body as I have been a survivor for 5 years now. I thought it might be a UTI but urine was clean today. Anyone have any input? I’ve washed the prep off my skin with soap, water and alcohol, taking Benadryl for itching and applying cortisone cream to skin. Thanks, Sunshinebecca
It may settle down over a few weeks. If not, well, more patience and consult the doc. Bodies can take time to recover from an allergic reaction. Keep us informed.
Hello sunshinebecca, as tetra said, it will more than likely settle down in a few weeks. I just wondered if your mobility is less since the surgery as this may also be a trigger for the increase in spasticity too, this happens with me sometimes- although it sounds like the reaction is a likely cause.

Yes, muscle spasticity has definitely been worse after the surgery. I did think that the surgery itself may have been the cause. You just never know with spasticity what the trigger is. I do have a Bacolfen pump refill on Monday but I’m already at a high dose really don’t want to increase it more. Just may watch and see if it does settle down and hopefully it does. I am going in to the surgeon’s office Fri 3/2 to remove the glue inside my elbow incision as that is what is causing the allergic reaction.
Let us know if some light gets shed on the trigger and when it settles sunshinebecca, all the best with it.
So my tone started calming down as soon as the allergic reaction was clearing up. I read a post on this website that said spasticity can be flared due to anything with the skin. It really could have been a combination of things, but thankfully it has calmed back down!!
