Hey guys/gals it’s been a little while I’ve posted ( not sure if any one notices). Here’s a little update and vent.
I had a baclofen pump implanted about 8 months ago and it was perfect for me. Totally made the difference of dependent and independent for me. Well about 3 months ago I get a return of spasticity ( I could still transfer and drive) Spasticity slowly got worse until I couldn’t really do anything independently apart from the pain I was in from it. Took about a month of x rays, labs and confusion to learn that the catheter was kinked (the withdrawal side effects where horrible). Upon opening me up for surgery, they find that of the 4 sewturs holding it in place 2 had broken loose causing the pump to flip over multiple times causing the catheter to kink. Life was perfect for a week and a half then here I am again battling spasticity, possible UTI, dysreflexia and surgery precautions. On a side note I baught a 17 Pacifica with a new Braun conversion and I’m already having issues with it. After putting the bolt on the bottom of my power chair to lock the chair in, I now get stuck on any little threshold (I’ve gotten stuck in several vehicles). It’s ironic how the bolt was gonna make me more independent alternatively made it worse lol. The last thing I can think of right now is my manual chair. I ordered a new set of push rims and somewhere between taking apart tire and rim the technician punctured both inner tubes ( he’s going to fix it). There’s a few other things that I’m forgetting and a few that are inappropriate but I’ll leave those out. I know it could be worse. I just feel like these past few months have been hell. Wow I don’t think I have written this much since I was in high school. There’s my update and thanks for letting me get all of this off my chest

Hi I think places like this are great to have a vent on ,also there's people can relate , You sound like you have every right to be angry ,spacticity is awful !!! It's a horrible side effect to spinal injuries..and especially as you had been fitted with a pump and getting life together to go through all that .. I suffer with it bad too and also on baclofen but tablet form which I'm nearly off , by choice as my spacticity was still bad even on a high dose so I thought see wat happens to come off it slowly , But you having to go through surgery to have things sorted is awful ,life in a chair is tough as it is without the other added features !! Then to have it all sorted again only to have problems again ,yea I would say that alone is enough to say .. s*** give me a break !! As the for the cherry on top of all that the chair problems .. I think your post was well written and very calm considering were as some like myself would have written a very erratic and maybe a lot of un chosen words to vent .. I hope the spacticity situation is sorted very quickly for you ,you do sound like you have been going through hell and everything else is sorted , When a few things go wrong every thing else seems to fall apart at the same time I'm in a similar situation were ur dealing with 1 issue but for some reason it's not enough so a few more are added When it rains it rains !! Sending hugs mimm X
Nice to see you again, Garciia. Could you please put your level of injury on your profile? While reading your story, I was trying to relate the baclofen pump and your spacicity with what you can “do”. Sorry you”ve had so much “re do” down time.
this reiterates my premise that if you can do without surgery and implants then so much the better. Knowing what I know now, I'd have to be on death's door before I had such a large implant as a baclofen pump. You are forever tied into a system of refilling and adjusting the dose at the mercy of your consultant, because you cannot adjust it yourself. And with the possibility of it going wrong, it is a ticking timebomb (ticking is not a euphemism ... put a stethoscope to it or ask somebody to press their ear against the pump and you will literally hear the motor tick ... The speed dependent on the dose).
Sorry to hear of your problems, Garciia20. I too get very discouraged when there is a string of problems. The one with your pump, however, is more than a problem, it is a disaster. God bless.
I step in the water, but the water has moved on...
garciia20, I also have that bolt under my chair for the EZ Lock system in my van and I have gotten stuck because of it a few times. Thankfully I’ve had people around to help me get unstuck. What kinda power chair do you have? I find that going up thresholds in an angle (when possible) helps.
