During my recent inpatient hospital stays I was offered Reiki massage performed by volunteers affiliated with the hospital. First of all I was blown away that the hospital would actually condone such alternative practices, but was also very excited to try it. I had a massage for 20 minutes at least twice a week while I was an inpatient, and can't begin to tell you how wonderful it is. There is no real 'massage', but simply a long gentle touch on various areas of the body. I cannot explain why or how it works, but it does. I have never felt so relaxed - like melting into the mattress. The stress and pain relief is phenomenal. I now want to learn how to do it myself and have found a local reiki master to teach me. That, of course, will have to wait until after my surgery, but in the meantime I'd recommend this to anyone; especially if you're in pain.
I also found out that Reiki is based on these five daily mantras, which all start with: "Just for today...". They are:
Just for today, I will live in gratitude. Just for today, I will not get angry. Just for today, I will not worry. Just for today, I will respect all living things. Just for today, I will be true to myself.
It's difficult to follow, but if you can it works.
I like these five daily mantras. But I wonder what being 'true to oneself' really means? If you take it literally, as William Burroughs did in one of his famous quotes, it can be quite selfish. He said: the only possible ethic is to please oneself. Is that the same thing? Being 'true to oneself' is also 'pleasing oneself'. Enough of this philosophy. Welcome back Jaylock. Nice to see you here again. We have all been worried about you.
Hi jaylock, - lovely to have you back - we missed you.
Co incidentally I have just discovered a Reiki practitioner who lives just up the road from Peter and I. I am going to give it a try myself and if any good will take Peter. So it's good to hear how much benefit you got from it.
I hope your surgery goes well and will be thinking of you.

I wondered about that, too, mikeq, It reminded me at first of the Aleister Crowley quote, "Do what thou wilt". Since he's been so vilified, it didn't seem like the best of philosophies, but reading up on it more 'pleasing oneself' can actually be a good thing. For instance, if we stand up for a (our?) moral belief even in the face of ridicule or punishment by others. I'm too tired right now to explain it any better. I'd love to discuss it more at some time in the future though.

Thank you, moco, I need all the positive energy I can get. Yes, do try the Reiki. It's absolutely marvelous. Please let me know how it goes.
jaylock, I had the Reiki earlier today. It was, as you say, marvellous. I am not sure what I believe about blocked chakras and energy etc but I have an open mind and anything that makes me feel that relaxed can only be good. An hour's treatment passed in a flash. I felt lots of pressure in my solar plexus area - as though it was being pressed down, even though she wasn't touching it. She told me after that I have some blockages in solar plexus (3rd) chakra and although for my first treatment it was just a gentle, relaxing Reiki, she says that if I go back she will do more on that area. She is prepared to treat Peter at home (her treatment rooms are in an old building with no lift) and Peter is keen to give it a go - at the very least an hour of relaxing will make him feel better. She also suggests some meditation lessons for him. She was a nurse for 30 years (reassuring) and has been doing Reiki part time at home for 10 years. She recently decided to give up her nursing and make this her full time job. Your post came just at the right time when I was dithering about whether to try it - I am very glad I did. So thank you. If we both get benefit from it, I may do a training course with her. Like you I want to learn how to do it myself. I liked her enormously which helped and there wasn't too much of the "hippy dippy" about her approach. Hopefully you are going into your op full of positive energy. I will watch out for your postings.

There is no need to believe or disbelieve, just pay attention to your sensations, such s what you felt in the solar plexus, and your own senses plus logic will eventually tell you what is most-likely-true, and what is most-likely-not. It may be useful to study both the chakra maps and meridian charts so you can put your own sensations together with those ancient systems if you stick with it. There are now electrical sensors that practitioners can use to track meridians.
My acupuncturist has a slogan on her desk- "Getting stabbed can make you feel great!
I step in the water, but the water has moved on...

Sound advice Tetra. I will spend some time researching before my next appointment. I have a lot of questions
jaylock, if you are reading I hope things are good and positive for you. Or for anyone else who was interested in the Reiki Reiki rocks. Have done my attunements now and getting so much positivity from it. Still not sure what I believe but my Reiki Master says that doesn't matter at this stage. The universe doesn't really care what I believe apparently! Unlike the gods there are no egos involved. It will carry on doing what it does. Reiki energy is there and after an attunement anyone can channel it. All to do with vibrations. Seems that Reiki can fit in with most belief systems but as it was discovered and taught by a Buddhist monk it chimes well with the buddhist beliefs and way of life. I know that I feel like something positive is happening to me and the self treatments I am doing for the 21 days following the attunements are so relaxing and make me feel good and refreshed. I feel much heat especially in my hands. They tingle a lot too. The meditation I do every morning is getting a bit easier, though I fear I have a long way to go before I have to stop dragging my brain back to "this moment" every few seconds. Work in progress. I am looking forward to being able to do some treatments on Peter as he has found Reiki really relaxing and and felt much more positive after treatments. The relaxation also helps calm his very tight muscles. Friends and family have varying degrees of tolerance for my enthusiasm. But majority verdict is that it seems to be doing me good. Seeing colours (lots) during a treatment are either the Reiki energy or my frontal cortex chucking out happy hormones . But whichever it is a very interesting and positive experience. If anyone is in touch with Jaylock I would love to know how she is doing.
