I am new to forums and new to CES. Everything has happened so quickly and am exhausted. I was self-employed previous to the diagnosis and operation, however, since everything happened I have not been able to get back to work. Someone has suggested I may be able to get some disability benefit help? This is all new to me though so any help or advice would be hugely welcome and extremely grateful.
Hey there nicky, welcome to the forum! I'm sorry to hear about your recent CES diagnosis, the beginning will be the hardest but that's why we're all here to help I'm not too familiar with disability benefits in the UK so Lαrα or another member from there might be able to fill you in. Feel free to start a thread introducing yourself in the introductions section found here so members can get to know you!
Hi nicky, Welcome to the forum...sorry about your CES...its a very difficult time that you are going through but it will get better.
I will guide you the best i can through the benefit system for what may be available to you..
Firstly contact the disability living allowance helpline, the tel number is:0843 116 0034..ask them to send you a form so you can make a claim. You can claim for care and mobility. The benefit is split into two sections.
My advice is to take the form to your doctor and ask him/her to sign....this will help your claim....i can give some tips once you have received the form if you contact me via pm on how to fill it in.
Did you pay a self employed NI contribution? If you did then you can claim approx £100 per week for working and support allowance, the contact number for this is 0800 055 6688
Lara do you know if people are often refused benefit help when diagnosed with CES?
CES is a lifelong condition with many associated issues so you should not be refused. There are different levels of payments, the care component will be either low , middle or high..same as mobility.
A lot depends on how the form is filled in to which rate you will be given....your doctor should support your claim.
I would refer to CES also as a Spinal Cord Injury as it is more recognised but also state CES. When you fill the form in, describe your worst day, not your best.,
