Hello, are there any walking paraplegics on here? I can take a few steps but not enough to walk far unassisted. Im 1 year into my injury since my fall and im worried this will be as much as I recover. Ive been told by my neuro surgeon that ill have my most recovery within an year. I never realized how serious a spinal cord injury is until now and it does get me down thinking that this is as much as I will recover.
Hi iloveellisse..m what you can call a walking paraplegic as we both have an incomplete injury. Its real good news that you are taking some steps, even though they are assisted.
I am sure that you will make further progress because one year is still very early on and you are still within the recovery period for another year at least. Nerve regeneration happens very slowly, so slow that you may not even notice it...but it will be happening.
You will also become stronger and this will help with your walking....im 2.5 years on and still gaining more strength...and io intend to continue to.
Keep working at it and stay positive..wether you become able to walk without aids i cant say but never say never!

Hello iloveellisse, I'm a walking para, just over 3yrs. Have you worked with a P.T. in the past and are your working with one now? All you can do is try to maximize your return. That's the first step (is that a pun?) anyway, once you get to that point which is still a way down the road for you, then if you still need assistance you'll be able to fit what best works for you. Right now I wear AFO's, in the future I may need more mechanical aids and I'm okay with that. Whatever it takes to live to the best of my ability.
Actually i had another health problem that stopped me from being able to start physio therapy until 5 months ago. I was so very excited to make my first steps, i feel like a baby and learning to walk again.
This week i walked for the first time between the bars, you know the ones with a bar to hold onto on each side. I had someone in front of me and behind. I was very wobbly and very tired after but i felt very proud of myself. I am hoping that i can use crutches in time and i can use them to get to the car and then back to the house using them because it will just be easier for me and maybe a little around the house.

Hi iloveellisse, your injury and progress seems very similar to mine. Don't worry about being one year into your recovery, it will get better and better as the weeks and months go by, unfortunately it's not a quick process but we will get there mate. Hey try posting a video or two about what your doing.

Somehow I missed this post@lloveellise. Sorry and thank you Butiki for bringing it back up. What Butiki and Lara have said is so true. I've been on other sites where people are 6-7yrs in and still getting return. One guy 6yrs. woke up one day a had to pee, now has his bladdar working. The human body is amazing, what it can't fix it modifies best it can.
I'm just starting to see how serious this is myself and I'm comming up on 4yrs. in July. Other people have almost no clue of whats going on so it's nice to share here were people understand what your saying first hand. Hang in there, we are in this together. Mark

I am a walking paraplegic. I found that it gets better with time and walking. My advice is just to go as far as you can each day. It gets better. You are very early still in your journey. Keep at it step by step.
I'm another walker, nearly 4 years on. I still need a chair for distance and speed, but I have managed a couple of kilometers . . . ( took me a couple of hours and a lot of pain mind . . . ) generally go around on two sticks now - not bad as they didn't expect me to be able to walk at all . . .

When I had my surgery, I was falling because my feet were so bad. I was told that I might not be able to walk at all afterwards and might wind up in a nursing home. I am so happy, so grateful that I am walking and that I can sort of take care of myself. I miss what I have lost, but acknowledge that it could have been so much worse. I start to complain a lot, but then I look at my friends in wheelchairs and I bite my tongue.
I can walk very short distances with AFOs and crutches. I'm at about 3 years since my first major issues. My progress is now declining due to degenerative discs. Hopefully nobody else here has to deal with that on top of an SCI. It really makes things more difficult with age.

truwrecks, is it the pain that is causing the difficulty walking and did any of the discs herniate?
Well its all relative to be honest...its great to have upright mobility but it also comes with its own challenges too

Pain and lack of muscle control contribute to the lack of mobility. I have poor muscle control in both legs below the knees. I have lost a lot of feeling in both feet as well.
