I haven't checked in in awhile but I am finally living with my guy 2500 miles away from where I grew up. Things are wonderful, mostly... Yesterday a baseball sized lump appeared on his bottom. His mom checked it put and said it is a pressure sore. Sidenote- DO NOT GOOGLE PRESSURE SORES!! He said this is just the beginning of one as the skin is swollen and red but not broken. So for the next few days he is staying in bed keeping pressure off of it. Not that I don't think he is correct about his own diagnosis, but I have never seen a pressure sore so I don't know what to expect. How about you all? Are pressure sores typically large lumps in the beginning? If so, are there any other treatments besides keeping pressure off of it. It is killing him to have to lay in bed all day. I feel helpless and just want to help...
No, aliyash. Mine were blisters that burst,...and I’ve had many. Though unlikely, would they happen to have taken and saved photos of his previous bedsores? I actually have photos of mine. I’ll offer my unsolicited advice...Besides keeping the pressure off the sores (which is essential), I put touches of Lugol’s iodine on my open sores. Lugol’s iodine is FOOD GRADE and does not contain isoprophyll alcohol, i.e., it does NOT contain rubbing alcohol. Also, I use a zapper to kill bacteria in my body. Mine is a SyncroZap. $275. But there are also other good models much cheaper. Zappers are not medical devices, so no doctor will ever authorize their use. But to me, it’s a life saver.
P.S. My sores occurred in hospitals and nursing homes, then later in my own home before I could get a Roho cushion.
Well, you are not helpless. It is of some help to listen to your guy complain. A limited amount of complaining is normal and what fun is it if no one listens? Secondly there is nothing 'normal' about a pressure sore showing up the size of a baseball. I would go to an infectious disease doc quickly. He is likely to be on bedrest for quite a while.
I'm surprised that his mom is not alarmed. The Reeve Foundation has a link where you can ask questions and a regular question and answer with an SCI nurse. You can find that here:
While you are not currently facing a wound that won't heal here is an outstanding article that surveys the latest treatments doctors may not know about yet: newmobility.unitedspinal.org/NM_Oct_18/#?page=38 Keep it in your "favorites" list.
While I understand that neither your friend nor his mom seem alarmed this should be taken seriously. Does he keep a file of photos of previous skin problems? Everyone should. Take a few pics on your phone and show them to him if this has not been done. After all, he is in charge. Place your hand in the pic for a size reference. Keeping good photographic records of all my problems, be it skin or strange things in my urine, has helped gain me more respect from my doctors. They do not trust what I tell them but photos and careful written records impress them. it's the kind of data they trust and I never know when my records are going to be really important to my treatment.
Well... a call was made to Craig hospital (Colorado) and pictures were exchanged. Apparently, bc he has a lot of scar tissue there this is the norm for the beginning of a pressure sore. It was worse last night but thanks to quad pads and lots of turning it is sliiightly smaller. Next question, how do I raise his spirits? He is stuck in bed and can't see the tv. It's killing him to have to be spoon fed and lay around all day. It kills me to be away at work all day, not to mention I'm super sleepy. I think I may try to rig up the laptop for him tonight where he can watch a movie with me. Any other ideas?

That's good news that is smaller. I agree this should be taken very seriously, do not use a donut but keep all the pressure off. I fought an open sore for a year before having flap surgery with 5 weeks in the hospital. Dinner and a movie are always great and board games can be a good way to pass time.
Ever feel like dying, ever feel alone, Ever feel like cryin', lost child in a store, Ever feel life pushing, shoving you away, Ever feel like breaking down, funeral in the rain Feel like slipping away
I never considered board games! Thank you! We have been using quad pads and rotating side to stomach every couple of hours. Thank God for his mom, I would be a wreck! That is absolutely crazy that you fought that sore so long. I think the severity of injuries that may be minor to "walkers" was a bit lost on me at first. Its a learning process, but I just don't want to learn at the price of his health.
aliyash, TV becomes very important in this circumstance. $50 to $70 buys a simple flat screen TV. That’s what I have...and no cable or satelite...can’t afford it. Just over the air reception. And a remote control, of course. And give him a large hand mirror for when he turns away from the TV in bed. He can still hold up the mirror to get an idea of what is going on while he listens to his TV program.
