Is it wrong to do a digital stimulation on myself every morning? I take a softener so as not to be backed up all the time...with success. I just hate sitting on my commode for an hour every morning hoping to go. It just seems to be a waste of time. I can do a digital stimulation and I go right away and I’m done...case closed. The problem is my wife is bothered and feels I am doing damage to myself by doing this everyday. I cannot feel from the chest down so maybe she is right? I don’t know. What is the general consensus here with you guys? I’m new to all of this and am still learning. It’s frustrating to waste an hour on my toilet with mixed results. Digital stimulation and done is what I say.
Digital stimulation is an accepted and normal procedure for people with neurogenic bowel. Yes, it is possible to do damage so as a person without sensation you should be careful to o it gently. It can lead to thickening of the anal sphincter area but that is not dangerous in itself. Your wife is mistaken. I would be thrilled if the only thing I needed for a successful BM were a bit of digital stimulation.
On a humorous note, it is hilarious to see this thread pop up this morning right above the thread "erection advice?"
I use Manual evacuation (also known as rectal clear). I always have to remove feces with my finger inside of a lubricated vinyl glove. Before I figured this out, I had to take too much laxative or prune juice. I have partial feeling “in there”, and yes, any aggression at all HURTS, and hurts for a couple of hours. Be very, very gentle with yourself. I’ve even come to the conclusion that it’s better to leave part of the “too soft stuff” in there than to get it completely cleaned out but at the cost of being too rough on the delicate tissue. Any residual that is too soft to dig out (at the time that you get most of it out) will firm up within a few hours and be “available for pickup” (lol) when you next access the anal canal.
Like Vintage I use manual evacuation with diet, I hate laxatives. I have tried several routines including a bowel care chair and Enemeez enemeez.com/ before finding what works for my routine.

Digital stimulation is the procedures that I was taught in rehab as the only acceptable means. I was taught that I had to be in a bowel care chair with no more than 3 insertions and it would take an hour or more (even with the laxatives) for gravity to pull it out. As it turns out rehab taught a lot of things that I personally don’t agree with. You have to find what works for you and everyone is different, but it sounds like you are having success in a short amount of time. You need to figure out why there’s blood, fingernails? hemorrhoids? Too aggressive? I will look around and find some articles about digital stimulation that you can share with your wife to help with her very loving and caring concerns

2510, I use vinyl gloves, not latex and not Nitrile. Latex gloves and Nitrile gloves SHRED anal tissue. So, this is my first tip. Second, I use olive oil as my lubricant. I pour a small amount into a tiny, 2 oz., wide-mouthed jar (yes, it was an anchovies jar). After I put on the vinyl glove, I dip my gloved fingertips into the olive oil. I only fill the little jar of olive oil about half full, and this amount will last me through four or five ‘events’. Since the glove I put on is clean (and I don’t double-dip!) the oil will stay clean through the next few days until re-fill time.
For hemorrhoids, please buy collinsonia root (stone root). It strengthens blood vessels. Also, quickly eat some fresh jalapeño pepper or cayenne pepper, mixed with something appropriate -like sour cream or avocado. Or, you can take cayenne in capsules. Within a couple of days, rectal bleeding won’t be a problem,...unless you are being ‘way too aggressive.
I have know of these remedies and used them for forty years,...before I became SCI.
I suggest buying collinsonia root in powder form and then putting it into capsules yourself (using The Capsule Machine). Most herbal companies add magnesium stearate to their capsules because they can run their machines faster with it, but magnesium stearate is bad for us. Or, you can take collinsonia root softened in water (last resort, if you don’t have The Capsule Machine and empty capsules).
Oooh. A bowel care chair! Tell me more, lostinspace .
When I was getting ready to discharge rehab I ordered the bowel care chair from the medical equipment company which was supposed to be $2,000.00 and insurance would not cover anything. When they showed up with the medical equipment they had a real POS for a loaner chair until mine arrived since they refused to order it until I got home. We tried to use the loaner but you can’t sit a high level quad in a POS chair with no padding or support about 6” off the ground I slumpt over like a pile of jello against hard surfaces everywhere so I had my care giver pull me back tight in the sling so that I’m hanging in the sling just barely touching the chair. In order for this to work she would have to get on her knees reach under the chair to perform digital stimulation so I had her raise me to a comfortable height and just hung from the sling. When the chair arrived 2 weeks later I tried it once but there are a lot of pressure points and it was very big to leave in the middle of the bedroom so when the invoice arrived for $3,600.00 I told them to pick it up, well that’s a very edited version of what was said. It was about this time when we started cutting way back on laxatives and soon realized they are way more of a mess than good and completely cut them out. With the mess out of the way I suggested we move to the bed the same as when I first went into the hospital and that’s the procedure we stuck with.

Thanks everyone, I will pass the info onto my wife. I don’t feel so bad about doing it now. After all, it does work for me. I’ll just need to use more lube and be careful since I can’t feel down there!
lostinspace, I honestly started laughing out loud when I got to this part of your post: “In order for this to work she would have to get on her knees...”. Your story brought back bad memories from my days in nursing homes. I wasn’t getting any bowel help other than laxatives. And therapists that I’d had earlier in the hospital hadn’t even mentioned digital stimulation or digital removal of feces. Since digital removal of feces wasn’t on my chart, the nursing homes wouldn’t allow it,...they wouldn’t give me enough prune juice,...and they wouldn’t give me suppositories when I needed them. They withheld laxatives if my chart said I’d had a BM, no matter how full my belly was. It was an absolute nightmare. It was as though they were blindfolded.
For showers, I needed to use the ONE padded shower seat that the nursing home had for my showers. So, I had to plan my showers around the others in the nursing home who needed that same chair. I would injure the skin on my delicate little butt if I used the hard plastic shower chairs. Whoever thought it was a great idea to make shower chairs with ‘texture’ should have their head examined. Okay, so never mind about the bowel care chair. It wouldn’t work for me either. What does POS stand for?
2510, as a C6 complete quad I do my bowel routine every morning which includes at least one digital stim. I also take laxatives every night and a suppsitory before getting onto my commode chair in the morning. The entire process sucks but you gotta do what you gotta do.
In the long run I don’t think it’s good for you since I also have bleeding sometimes because of a hemmrhoid which I’m pretty sure I got because of the stims. I like what vintage suggested about the gloves, olive oil and collinsonia root. I’m going to give those a try!
And don’t forget the cayenne pepper, DJ. It can literraly keep a person from bleeding to death. It can be applied topically or taken by mouth, or both. Emergency medical kits should have it, but they don’t. It can stop nosebleed, too. lifehacker.com/5824693/use-cayenne-pepper-to-heal-small-cuts
Two years ago, I didn’t have a Roho cushion, and I got terrible bleeding hemorrhoids. I also had an awful health care agency, which I had to fire. I believe it was retaliation,...but the aide/agency reported me to Adult Protective Services for rectal bleeding! ...(and a few other choice things). I ate fresh jalapeño peppers to stop the bleeding and ordered collinsonia rootf by mail. By the time Adult Protective Services came, all the blood was cleaned up,...no blood in bed either. Knowing how to manage a bleeding crises can save your life and/or your independence at home.
Happily, I got a kind, intelliget man from Adult Protective Services. He saw that the other reported items were trumped up, and he gave me a good report.
