Do UTIs eventually get more serious if you keep getting them? It seems like I get a UTI at least every few months, if not more often. Most of the time they resolve themselves. However, I was admitted to the hospital for the second time in about 3 months. I was discharged today. This second time, I urine was dark red and my blood pressure was 82/54. I felt light-headed, too. At least this time I could still complete a sentence without forgetting what I was saying like the first time. So, I am wondering if I am going to end up in hospital every time I get a UTI now.
Gosh don't say that. Being catheterised for five years I have had my fair share of UTI infection but hospitalised only once. Are you drinking enough. I had my tube changed on Wednesday and my wee smells very strange now. I will drink loads and try and flush it out. Are you taking any antibiotics. I know a lady with MS who takes one Cefelexin every day as a preventative measure. As you have probably read I take cefelexin too but only before each catheter change. My urologist said that is something I could try in the future if I start getting poorly but stick with the system I have for now. Hope you find something that works for you. Take care.
I seem to get a uti every 6 weeks or so...and I self cath. I follow all precautionary measures too but I still get them. I’m new at all this so I’m still learning.

I have a suprapubic and take Hiprex to stave off UTI's, I also take high dose vitamin C 2000mg a day. excess vitamin C is expelled through the urine so it helps a lot to keep UTI's at bay as it is ascorbic acid.
Ever feel like dying, ever feel alone, Ever feel like cryin', lost child in a store, Ever feel life pushing, shoving you away, Ever feel like breaking down, funeral in the rain Feel like slipping away
I make an herbal tea that dissolves debris in the urinary tract. Marshmallow root, gravel root, and hydrangea root. Add black cheery juice to the tea. Drink only 1/4 cup tea the first time. Save the rest. Drink a half cup after about three hours. And so on. This is so that your bladder won’t suddenly fill with too much urine. I use this any time my urine smells like ammonia.
Karen67, do you catheterize yourself? What catheterization technique do you use (clean or sterile)? I always got UTI’s about every 4-6 weeks but for the past 7 years (since getting injured) up until August of this year, I’ve had a nurse or caregiver do my catheterizations for me every morning and night. Since August of this year I’ve been living on residence at my university campus and have been catheterizing myself morning and night and I haven’t had a UTI thus far. I use prelubricated sterile catheters and sanitize my hands 85% of the time and try to touch the catheter as little and as high up as possible and so far it’s been working out quite well.
I take a cranberry pill twice a day and admittedly should be drinking more water but so far so good and I hope it stays this way. I’d try what vintage suggested since I’m all for natural remedies!

I used to self-cath, then I suddenly became incontinent. To be honest, I prefer the foley because having to self-cath every 6 hours is SO inconvenient and a pain in the "you-know-what".

I do not think I could handle a suprapubic. I am not medically-inclined and I think it will gross me out LOL.

I am trying the cefelexin, but I can't yet say if it helps. The first time I took it before getting catheter changed, I already had a UTI. I think it was the same case the second time. Maybe the 3rd will be the "charm".
I usually cook “from scratch”,...mainly so that I can control what ingredients I’m eating. I got off-tract a couple of weeks ago and began eating some store-bought foods and canned foods. In my case, this is a “no-no”. Two days ago, I got the tell-tale back pain that screams “kidney trouble”. My usual remedy (those kidney herbs that I’m always telling everyone about) weren’t fixing the problem this time. I’d ignored my dear body for too long. Today, I had to really put my mind to fixing the problem.
Here’s what I did this morning....and now the pain is gone. In addition to my kidney herbs as a tea... I took a capsule of L-Ornithine. I ate a tiny “salad” of cilantro (a flavorful version of parsley) with freshly squeezed lemon juice, and a small shake of Himalaya pink salt...just an amount of salad that fits in a coffee cup, not a bowlful. I used my. SyncroZap. (This always relieves pain, at least a little.) I took a teaspoon of Brewer’s yeast powder, dissolved in a half cup of water. And I put ice packs on my back.
I’m better. The pain is gone. So, in celebration of being able to enjoy life again, I offer these little tips to others with this painful, life-threatening problem.
