Hi, I’ve had a pressure sore on and off the past 3 years around the ischia area. When I get the sore the healing process isn’t t the problem it heals reasonably quick but once I’m back in my chair after a few days it shows up and breaks down again. I’m now sitting on a roho cushion and it’s helped a bit but still breaks down. I’m constantly head scratching thinking why this is happening, when it does heal and I’m back in my chair then it breaks down again you would think the sore would start as a red area first but my sore is like a dark/blackish blood area what shows up first. So could it be my transfer board what’s causing it? As I transfer from bed to chair?
I have no experience with a transfer board but I have battled a sores. Keep in mind when a pressure sore presents itself it could already be in an advanced stage. If your able to arrest the wound and get it to start healing then the surface will heal first but the underlying area by the bone may take much longer to heal 3 to 6 months or more with no pressure. Unfortunately in real life it's almost impossible to put zero pressure in these areas and still function.
Ever feel like dying, ever feel alone, Ever feel like cryin', lost child in a store, Ever feel life pushing, shoving you away, Ever feel like breaking down, funeral in the rain Feel like slipping away
Hey rossi17, I got my first pressure sore on my bum in August this year after 7 years of being injured. Once I started treating it, it went away after about a month but I got another one shortly after which also just finished healing up last week. I know that it’s my cushion causing it since I’m using a 5-6 year old ride custom cushion. Over the years I’ve grown in height and weight so I should have gotten a new cushion earlier but I didn’t bother to. I’m getting a new power chair next week and will also be getting a new cushion.
rossi17, I don’t use a sliding board to get in and out of bed. I do think that the sliding board is one big cause of butt sores. Also, I have to sleep on plastic, not cloth sheets. But I lay out a clean chuck (pad) every night on the side of the bed before I transfer. This helps me slide in without friction.
Hi again, Thanks for your replies, I’m thinking what Lostinspace has put might be my problem because when it heals it’s probably only healing on the outside first and not underneath and I’m getting back up and after a few days it breaks down again. The actual sore is around 2.5cm x 2cm and only a grade 2 but starting to get near the stage 3 as I’m getting slough on it! The district nurse changes the dressing every 3rd day and they say it’s unusual as the sore widens but stays one depth around 1.5 / 2mils. (That is when I’m up in my chair) but when I’m in bed it shrinks everyday. So it looks like then in bed for Xmas and new year and a few more weeks after that 😬 Thanks for your replies Paul
rossi17, I’m going to tell you about a couple of alternative therapy things that I use when I’m ‘in trouble’ healthwise. SyncroZap $290.00. (Get the copper tubes, not the wristbands.) The SyncroZap kills bacteria in your body. It isn’t a medical device. Manufacturers can’t even tell you that it kills bacteria. They would be closed down; sued; arrested. Take your pick. Anyway, it works great at killing bacteria inside your body - 9volts -and helps you heal much faster than without it. A cheaper version is $35.00 at www.ctbusters.com. Basic Zapper.
I put Lugol’s iodine on my butt sores. Just a touch. I also take a couple of drops of Lugol’s iodine in a half cup of water. If your thyroid hasn’t been getting enough iodine, it can’t fight infection. Another way I get iodine is taking capsules of sea kelp. Lugol’s iodine is FOOD GRADE. Do not take other types of iodine orally.
