My husband has been a t12 paraplegic for 18 years. He recently had a minor surgery 3 weeks ago. Since then, he is sleeping alot. Like 20 to 22 hours a day. He wakes up and is totally with it. Gets mad at me for trying to make him wake up. He is normally very independent. I has never been like this. He is completely oriented when he wakes. He only wakes enough to eat and use restroom. By the way, he is not following his normal bowel regimen which really worries me. Has anyone else ever went through this. I'm on the verge of just calling 911 and taking the risk of him hating me. I'm very very worried. Any thougts?
Can you inform the doctor who did the minor surgery this is happening, or did you? I would also talk to his GP looking for advice. You are correct that something is very wrong.
I'm with Tetra. Something wrong. Might be mental rather than physical - but still wrong. Please talk to his GP or whoever is in charge of his post op care.
I agree with Tetra and Moco, please convince your husband that he needs to speak with the surgeon or at least the GP...... since this change has happened since the surgery, its safe to surmise that it is probably related. I'm surprised your husband isn't worried also because as a SCI person, we all get concerned when our body acts differently especially since he's been injured for so long and knows his body now
I'd be talking to his GP even without his consent, I could understand sleeping 22 hours once or twice a month if he isn't sleeping normally otherwise, to me 18-20 hours regularly is sending off alarm bells in my head.
Really sorry that this is happening it must be very distressing for you. It's definitely something that needs medical advice on perhaps the when you go for your follow up appointment if not before. Take care and let's hope things change for the better
Does he seem depressed? Does he have a job to go to? Since he is a T-12, I would assume that he has at least some control over bowel and bladder? How about his parents? Children? Anyone else to get him going? Also, you have to be cognizant of bed sores forming.
I would be contacting the doctor that performed the procedure. They usually will tell you to contact them if problems develop.
