I'm curious to other SCI womens symptoms when they have started peri menopause and menopause. I'm peri menopausal and Ive noticed that my temperature control is worse that what it has been for the last 20 years. It's not so bad so that I feel that I need to take drugs like hormone replacement therapy ....as yet.... and I would prefer not to but I also don't want these symptoms to gradually get worse. My sleeping habits have also changed a little, not so much that it concerns me (again....as yet).....I suppose I'm just asking others for your opinions on how your body has handled the "change".
And guys....your opinion on your partners "change" is most welcome also.... an opinion from a loved one who sees what their partner is going through can be extremely beneficial...as they say, 'knowledge is power'
Hey Tarabev, I find the topic very interesting, but at that time I can not comment on that. I have (hopefully) a few more years until I have to deal with it.

I agree, I'm finding it interesting in that I think I'm having the hot flushes but it's nothing like one reads that able bodied women have.....I'm not doing anything and I suddenly feel quite warm, but I dont sweat because that's my side effect of my SCI. Something else which I've found interesting that my skin isn't healing as fast as what it used to, I fell over at Xmas time and got a scratch on the front of my lower leg and although it scabbed up and healed like normal, the scratch is still there and normally it would be gone by a month, so that could be due to a change in my hormones
Anyway, thanks for the response, if this site is still around in many years, maybe you can post about your 'change' in the future
Pity, that nobody else wants to comment. Who knows, maybe it will not take me that long anymore (I'm 40 now). Then perhaps I will dig up the thread again.

I cannot comment on menopause because i was done with it before my SCI. However, just to pass along a tip, I began taking a collagen supplement about 6 weeks ago as part of my search for an easily digested protein. As is my habit, I gave no weight to the promotional blurbs about "improves skin condition, digestion, yadda yadda...
Now I find my skin is less dry and scaly patches look much better. My digestion may, indeed, be improved. Who knew??

I don't think its that no-one doesnt want to comment, in general, there are less women statistically speaking who suffer a SCI compared to men. I've also posted this question on my facebook SCI walkers page and its not getting many responses on there either and that site is a lot more active than here (great site by the way, not only walkers are on there because all SCI people suffer from similar things).
One other woman had posed this question on CareCure last year but I wasn't having these symptoms then so wasn't able to answer, her question was very similar to mine so in a way that helps, I did respond to her query yesterday but the nurse said that she hasnt been on the site since.
Anyways, in about another 10 years jellyfish when you start menopause, you can remember back to this query lol

What's the collagen supplement that your taking Tetra? I have noticed that the skin around my ankles and feet are looking dryer than they used to be, I was thinking it may have been an age related thing.
I was in kinda the final stages of menopause when I had my accident.sweating was a real issue and my doctor prescribed gabapentin which really helped, though after a few months I was having memory issues and stopped taking it. It did get me past that part of menopause. So I am done with menopause.

I just googled gabapentin and menopause together and interestingly a study was done of women who had breast cancer suffering from the hot flashes and it was found that gabapentin helped a lot for the hot flushes and because gabanetin is used a lot for sci's, maybe thats why your doctor prescribed it for you.
Its is frightening worrying about losing ones memory. I don't like taking drugs and I take Oxybutyin for my overactive bladder and there are concerns it has links with dementia, I'd love more than anything to not take it but since I started taking them, it changed my life in that it gave me so much more independence.....so, I chose taking the risks over having to wearing incontinence pads all of the time, wetting the bed and having to stop every half hour when driving to use a toilet. I make sure I keep my brain active so hopefully I don't get dementia
Do you take anything now for menopause? Have you had a scan done for bone density? Because that can be a concern after menopause
C5/6 since 1964. I had a complete hysterectomy in 1992 and was put on estrogen patches which caused migraine headaches. I had never had headaches in my life. After many months on the patches, I called the OB/GYN to tell her that I was going off the patches, but wanted to make sure it wouldn't be dangerous to go "cold turkey." The nurse was very upset that I would question their advice and snapped, "Well, you'll get hot flashes!!!" I irreverently thought, "I live in Minnesota. I might like a hot flash!" Long story short, I have never had a single menopausal symptom. I had strength I never had because I was not low on iron anymore. It was wonderful. I got dry eye and dry mouth right after the surgery which I blame on the general anesthesia. My optometrist says it was caused by the loss of hormones, but it happened immediately after the surgery and the estrogen patches had no effect. I got night sweats once, but a pillow between my bony knees took care of that. I loved those years after the hormones stopped! I am now 75, so have shoulder & joint pain from 55 years in a wheelchair, but am grateful to still be here.

Thanks Crepe, Ive read so many stories of how women can really suffer from the side effects of menopause and was starting to think I was a rare case in that I'm handling it ok and was wondering if it was just me or maybe its a side effect from my sci in that I have less sensation from my neck down.
Thankyou for replying with your story and here I was thinking I was a long timer with my sci for 20 years! I'm really curious to how the care was for you in 1962. Did they have turners back then or were you just left in the one position in bed? What type of brace was used for you so your head and neck didnt move? What type of rehab did you have? Are you an incomplete or a complete?

Hi! I’m just at a year without a period... perimenopause seemed fine. A bit if an increase in temp control, but nothing really crazy. But, I’ve had 4 episodes of horrible headaches over the past 6 weeks and I’ve never had headaches before. Constipation has increased significantly with no other changes to timing of bathroom breaks, fluids intake by type or amount, diet or exercise. But, the absolute worst is the sweating. I’m a C-7/8 incomplete and have typically only sweat above my injury lines when having sever bladder or bowel related issues and it stopped immediately after I peed or pooped. BUT the past several weeks, I will sweat for 2 or 3 hours in the mornings. Well after I do my business. After I’ve eaten, taken meds, driven to work, gotten comfortable in my office. It’s horrible. A mild and consistent headache comes with it, but not terrible like an AD headache or the new hormonal headaches. My BP is normal or drops during these episodes. In the past I only sweated with high/AD BP levels. My blood hormone levels are well within the normal range for a perimenopausal/early menopausal 47 year-old, so my doctor doesn’t feel I need hormone replacement at this point. But, It’s becoming not only disgusting and uncomfortable, but worrisome. I think they’re hot flashes bc I’ll be flushed, burning up, sweating and freezing at the same time. 😢😢. There are really no SCI specialists near me, much less an OBGYN with SCI experience. I’ve been searching for weeks for any information on SCzi & menopause. So, if y’all find any studies or anything... Please tag me!
Hello there, bn looking around for some info on HRT and finally found this thread for which I'm so grateful.
I have a T4 complete injury and I have bn injured since July 1999
I'm 47 and perimenapausal for around the last 4 years. The last yr has become unbearable; Night sweats where I'm having to change my nighties around 4 times a night, then cold shivers. Disruptive sleep so I'm always knackered the next day. Terrible migraines the week b4 each period starts. Rash inbetween in the groin areas b4 my my period starts. Low moods and very emotional crying episodes. Anxiety n panic attacks. Sore breasts. Low Labido. You name it, iv got it!
I have suffered with depression and anxiety long b4 my accident n this have got considerably worse. My Advanced Mental Health Nurse suggested HRT could help this n after a few tests with my GP I have bn prescribed HRT patches which I have yet to put on until 6 days b4 my nxt period starts.
I have researched lots of information of the pros n cons of HRT but unfortunately there's not alot about the affects on Spinal Cord Injury.
HRT helps with not only the above that I suffer but the following;
HRT causes oestrogen levels to increase thus reducing bone loss n reducing the risk of oestporosis and breaking bones. (theos.org.uk) There is little or no increase on the risk of breast cancer if taken in the form of patches (NHS.co.uk) There is no link to suggest HRT causes Alzheimers as in a study published by the BMJ on Oct 2021. Combined HRT can reduce womb cancer (Cancer research UK.org)
I finally came across a Webnar conference on YouTube last wk on this subject and after careful consideration I have come to the conclusion that the benefits outweigh the risks.
I shall start the patches next week n see how things go for the nxt 6 mnths.
Wish me luck 🙂🙏🤞
I hope the above information can help anyone n please if considering trying it.
Please keep posting n I'd love to hear back from anybody.
