L3 level Injury was 11/02/2018 and since 12/25/2018 my boyfriend cannot sit up or transfer to his wheelchair due to pain from weightloss. Prior to his injury he was 6'1 and 160 pounds, currently he is 120 pounds and because of this his pain has been unbearable when he tries to sit up past a 60 degree angle. He has to travel by gurney every time he goes to a doctors appointment.
His primary doctor has not been helpful at all, in fact lowered his medication doses and is seriously lagging with helping get home physical therapy. His weightloss causes severe pain in his butt when sitting up, shooting pains down his legs, and the inability to even get into his wheelchair to get any type of therapy. His doctor does not want to give him appetite stimulants nor agreed to send him to pain management. Because of his insurance we are unable to switch offices. He eats regularly, not as much as before, but still several times a day. We are feeling very defeated and not sure what to do.
Has anyone else dealt with pain similar to to this? What did you do? We feel like not being able to get into his wheelchair for the last several months is setting him back very far in any hope for recovery.
kelseyhelton, I haven’t had the same problem, but I have parts of the same problems. Let me ask a few questions to orient myself. Does he have a nice Roho cushion on his wheelchair? (Or similar product,...an air cushion?) Without that, I was in agony, and developed sores on my bottom. Also, does he have sores on his bottom? If not, good. But I want to be sure I understand that his pain isn’t from sores or from lack of a good comfy air cushion. Now, pain medication. Yes, doctors get scrutinized (in the US) for how much pain medication they dole out ‘overall’ to their patients. obvi Apparently, your boyfriend’s pain matters less to his doctor than his doctor’s reputation with the government (if within the US). I take Kratom for pain. I pay for it myself and order through the mail. It is legal to do this in Texas and most other States within the US. Are you in the US? I’m sorry for your boyfriend’s pain, and yours, too.
I researched, and I think this product might help him get more out of the food he eats. I’m going to order some for myself. Does he have any digestive problem? drclarkstore.com/selenoexcell-200-mcg-100-capsules/
Hi kelseyhelton , I'm sorry that you had to seek us out. Unfortunately pain is not unusual when there is a SCI, it isnt caused by weight loss although not having enough padding on the butt doesnt help for comfort when sitting in the wheelchair. There are many people who lose weight after a SCI and find it difficult to put weight back on, its a common complaint for them. I think your boyfriend needs to try and address his pain with your doctor before addressing his weight loss. Pain is not only a common cause for weight loss, when one is in pain they also dont want to move as much which then can compound the pain issue because exercise is so important.
Its worrying that your doctor doesnt seem to fully grasp the pain situation that your boyfriend is in, maybe your boyfriend should go into the doctors surgery making a hell of a lot of noise saying how much pain he is in, upsetting the other patients! Well, that maybe a bit extreme but your boyfriend needs to really make his doctor listen to him and to not put on a brave face, doctors cant know how much pain a person is in, its up to the person to push the issue and tell the doctor exactly what pain they are feeling. Just know that it may take time to find pain medication which will suit your boyfriend, its basically trial and error to what can and doesnt help.
Also be very careful about over the counter and herb medication, just because one can get them without a doctors prescription doesnt mean they are safe and wont interact with the drugs your boyfriend is currently using and may cause even more issues. If you want to go down that route, please speak to your doctor about it before trying anything.

Yes, I can relate. I was 118-115 preinjury. I ended up dropping down to 85 pounds. It was a very scary experience. But I kept being told "you're anxious" or "you're depressed." Yeah, whatever..... My injury is metabolic and weight loss is one of it's major sign but if I understand you (and based on location) of what you are describing you are dealing with a "incident" rather than a disease. ????? Need more info.

Yes, a few years back my weight loss was the pituitary lack of hormone to the adrenal glands to manage Sugar, Sodium, Potassium and Cordisol. Rapid weight loss is a wipe out condition. Zapped strength and mental awareness. For mental fitness, I adopted the 'It's a Project' from The City of Hope Playbook. Simply, our bodies need our brains to be in business mode. The health of our bodies are the project. We need to keep notes for our doctors. Be bold to change doctors if they're not modivating. Find the right staffer to help with insurance or no ins programs. As for outcome, ask doctors to help us be the best we are capable and get used to telling everyone who loves us we're working on a new normal. I am a woman of faith. God always comes through. He created me, it's ok to expect the best. ❤️
