The burning question: Why can’t doctors help end the misery of urine infections?

"Even for many doctors specialising in urology or gynaecology, the idea of biofilm infections is relatively new."
Proving that doctors only read old journals and research and do not listen to their patients. The idea of biofilm has been discussed on SCI forums for years and I see general acceptance of the idea. More often it is just called 'colonization'. The discussed remedy of more of the same, meaning antibiotics, sounds to me like grasping at straws. Also, the link to bladder and kidney stones is important and not mentioned in the article. Still it is a useful article for those getting chronic UTIs even though they do not need catheterization.
For SCId people like us I suspect catheterization confuses both us and our doctors even more because we, or they, can assume infection is being repeatedly reintroduced, which may play a role but does not settle the question.
Certain fruit juices help against biofilm. www.mdpi.com/1420-3049/22/8/1256/htm Phenolic Compounds Contained in Little-known Wild Fruits as Antiadhesive Agents Against the Beverage-Spoiling Bacteria Asaia spp.
Received: 6 July 2017 / Accepted: 23 July 2017 / Published: 28 July 2017 Abstract: The aim of the study was to evaluate antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of juice from three different types of fruits: elderberry (Sambucus nigra), lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) and cornelian cherry (Cornus mas), and their action against adhesion of bacterial strains of Asaia lannensis and Asaia bogorensis isolated from spoiled soft drinks. ...
...The strongest anti-adhesive properties were noted for elderberry juice, which inhibited the adhesion of Asaia spp. to the polystyrene carrier by 87% on average. Slightly weaker properties were noted for lingonberry juice (85%), and cornelian cherry (77%). Considering the species of tested bacteria, tested juices were characterized by a stronger anti-adhesive activity in relation to A. lannensis, inhibiting the attachment of the cells by 75%.
Antibiotics kill good bacteria and bad bacteria. Antibiotics gave me a yeast infection in the hospital. I get good results with marshmallow root tea. Gravel root and hydrangea root are also good.
Make sure your current meds don't interact with the above suggested
as a long term sufferer of UTIs. All antibiotics kill good as well as bad bugs on your system. Everyone different, what ever you Bladder& Bowel management. I try to drink at least a litre water a day on top of my teas & coffee. I try to empty less than 450ml each time. using intermittent catheter. I do this to A to keep flushing out the bladder. B to reduce the effect of constipation . C avoid overfull bladder.. I take D-mannose before that cranberry capsules to help flush the bugs from bladder. l take acidophilus to help restore good bugs to my after course of antibiotics.

Urine infection is very common nowadays I always use antibiotic and recover my infection between 3 to 5 days between these days it was very difficult to me to pass out urine. One thing I suggested you that you change your underwear daily and the second one is before sex you always confirm that the vagina is not dirty at least wash it out your penis and vagina too. It may be helpful to you and other I use these precautions and now last 6 months not suffering from this infection.

Do NOT ask ones partner to wash out their vagina, doing that increases the risk of yeast infections and UTI's. It self cleans
Talk to your doctors about getting put on a regular gentamicin irrigation. I used a prophylactic dose of antibiotics for a while, and it always made me anxious about developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. I was fortunate to find a urologist who specializes in folks with neurological conditions. She started me on gentamicin irrigations, and I haven't had an infection since. Best yet, it avoids all the issues that come along with taking regular prophylactic doses of antibiotics.

That is a useful post, Mike.
Then you have partners who think they know better. I've had about 500 UTIs. Doctors usually treat. I've ended up in the ER because other organs got involved. They treat but ABs always have a cost. The problem is the immune system -- ask the question why? Maybe radiation? But it comes at a price.. Usually, people do the simple solution.
terenceblacker, antibiotics give yeast infections. The herbal tea of marshmallow root, hydrangea root, and gravel root treats UTI's by removing debris from the urinary tract. This treatment is called "alternative therapy". It is not "medical advice".
After the antibiotics give the patient a yeast infection, then the doctor gives the patient lactobacillus, in an effort to help the patient restore normal bacteria and overcome the yeast infection. Marshmallow root tea doesn't kill the good bacteria and doesn't cause a yeast infection. And the UTI just goes away. Hmmm. Interesting how that happens.
Consult ypur doctor before taking marshmallow root tea. (You'll probably have to tell him what it is, and where you read about it.)
