I found this very interesting read on how the pelvis, hips, knees, feet , spine and neck are affected by posture in wheelchair and sitting equipment.....For those who are concerned about the effects of sitting for long periods and the effects on the joints then this is an excellent and very clear read.
It offers effects and practical solutions ..an excellent read...!!
Regularly check the position of the pelvis so any changes can be quickly detected. Management will depend on whether the APT is fixed or correctable.
The following are possible solutions and either one, or a combination, may help. Solutions: 1.A good quality, tension adjustable back canvas with many narrow straps which can be adjusted to encourage ‘softening’ of excessive lordosis. A standard back canvas is inappropriate
2. Create a rearward sloping seat and carefully set up the back angle to reduce the tendency to lumbar lordosis
3.Using an adapted tray to form an anterior support for the trunk is often very effective and functional for the user
4.Padded pelvic positioning accessories (i.e. belts, straps and harnesses) can be used but need to be tight to be effective and are, therefore, not always well tolerated
5. Open the hip angle by altering the seat angle or using the recline function. Be careful not to cause the pelvis to slide forwards
6. Tilt-in-space is very beneficial Modifications to posture and position are best done in small incremental changes as these allow the user to physiologically adapt to them
(these are just a few tips from the article..it seriously is a great read!)

I use a custom ride cushion and backrest to help with the posture of my pelvis and back. It really helps me, it also really improved the quality of my walking too!
I think the importance of seating is overlooked sometimes, my original cushion was just a 3 layer foam cushion with memory foam on the top layer, but after 7 months it was becoming very uncomfortable and causing me pain on my thighs and making my left leg go numb and with bad pins and needles. So after trying 4 different cushions I have ended up with a Supracor Slimline cushion, very comfortable. It's a honeycomb rubber kind of stuff and gives me support where I need it, and it's washable. Thank goodness it was funded as it's over $800.00. So now I'm waiting for mine to be delivered, thankfully I was allowed to keep the demo cushion. Rohos are out for me as I'm a smoker. As for my posture we lower the back rest on my chair which has helped heaps with a bit of shoulder pain I was getting, I now don't have to raise my elbows when pushing and I have been funded a set of natural grip push rims wich hopefully will help with pain I have been getting in my hands.
To be honest i knew the importance of correct seating but this information emphasises how much is affected by seating and chair issues but this read made me think how important it is in so many ways.....the information offers practical solutions and shows the affects of sitting for long periods can be at least be alleviated by corrections made to the equipment you are using.
Be sure to read though guys...please...its important
Honestly it's doing great things for my posture. My old cushion was actually making my posture worst. Before I would be sitting very slouched and I would be sitting with all of my weight on my left butt cheek with my right hip raised a little bit if you can imagine that. That made it very easy to step my right leg because my weight was already on my left leg. It made stepping my left leg a challenge though, I would have to really lean over to my right to step my left leg.
Now my custom cushion fixes my hips making them more level. This helps with the walking because I don't have to lean as much to shift my weight onto each leg. It also helps keep me up right and not so slouched like an old man which is key for walking too.
Definitely deanertheweiner, that's what I thought. I originally started with the classic roho air cushion while I was in rehab then moved on to the roho hybrid which was a little bit better. After getting discharged I got a custom ride seat and backrest and I'm liking it. I do find my backrest a bit bulky though so I'll get a smaller backrest when I feel my trunk is stronger!
I want to add that i have been looking into how to take care of your shoulders for wheelchair users and whilst i was looking into it i was interested to find that seating and chair issues are also a vital factor to consider in taking care of the shoulder joint.
So here is the link to the post that i recently made on this subject....its very interesting and your longterm independence can depend on following some of the advice....
Good thing you've pointed that out Lαrα because I've noticed it myself. When my seating is not right I get extremely bad shoulder and neck pain! Prior to getting the seating adjusted in my power chair, I was only able to sit in it for 2 hours before getting that bad neck and shoulder pain whereas on my manual chair, I can sit all day because of the proper seating!
There's some really good info in the link she's posted so be sure to check it out

When I am out and about and am not able to remain sitting in my wheelchair, I bring a cushion that helps preserve correct posture. I use this cushion in my car always, so it is with me. Now that I have a better wheelchair, it is a pleasure to have good seating right with me!

Oh it must have been a hassle carrying that cushion around wavewolf, I'm glad you've got it all figured out now!
