So I have a couple questions for all of you. I’m five months into my injury which is an incomplete SCI. I do have movement in my legs although minimal at this point. I’m currently self paying rehabilitation three times a week at a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility in Memphis Tennessee. Tennessee Medicaid is covering the rest of the costs. I’m still waiting for my SSI and SSDI to finalize. the place I am in now is terrible. I’d like to hear from all of you on how you made the transition into either an independent or semi-independent lifestyle both financially and support wise. I guess what I’m saying is that I’m looking to build a life Outside of here at some point but really don’t know how that needs to happen. Any takers on offering up some advice?
My family is currently in Arizona and I don’t have a huge financial nest egg to draw of. Am I destined to live in a skilled nursing facility or can I make this happen on the outside world? Any help is appreciated.
I have learned from others that each state can very quite differently in types of levels of care. So all I can suggest is talk to everyone and google and call. You just need one helpful person who knows the system to send you in the right direction. Are you considering AZ? Do you have a family member who can look at places there for you? Be your own advocate. its frustrating when its hard to even get a live person on the phone but keep at it
jjcmbd, I was trapped in a nursing home despite having my own home sitting there waiting for me. The federally backed insurance plan that I was on had a person assigned to take care of things like helping me get back into my home. She drug her feet and dilly-dallied around and didn't do her job. She kept lying to me about how hard she was working on my case, when really she was doing nothing. I was supposed to go home in April of 2015, but it didn't happen until October. It turned out that all I was missing was a bed in my home. She left me "rotting" in that nursing home over the lack of a bed! When I found out, I said I would get a bed from a mission. I had mo money, so I was in a pitiable situation. But one assistant nurse administrator overheard me (in the hallway) talking on the phone to the insurance lady, and the assistant nurse administrator procured an old, broken bed for me from the nursing home, so I could go home to my house. I've been in my home now for almost 5 years. Fight your way out! You are worth it!
