Hello from Jan in Denmark
First of all I want to say that I was born with Aspergers Syndrome, which is a very light edition of authism for those of you who maybe haven’t heard about it. The important things here and now is that it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to say anything in short, and that it’s very often a HUGE problem for me to be a good listener and help others out. I of course try the best I can, but…I have to warn you, that I probably won’t be of much help in this group. It also doesn’t make things easier that I suffer from a great deal of lost strength as described below. Sorry. I just pray for your hopefully kindly understanding!
For three years now i have been suffering from some…until now…unexplained pain in the upper part of my back, in between my shoulder blades and in my neck.
For this i want some help, and i have tried to join several yahoo-groups, and also spinal-health.com, but i haven't received any activation keys from those groups, so what should i do? I just hope that a small miracle has happened now, and somebody in this group really can help me...
I have tried all there is of treatments in Denmark, like a physio-therapist (4-5 times), a chiropractitioner, massage, acupuncture, osteopathy, and then I have also had some x-rays, an MR-scan in the LOWER! part of my back (because my doctor wanted to check for eventually Modic-changes (unfortunately there wasn’t any Modic-changes in me), which most often occur in the lumbar region (where I also occasionally have pain), and because the Danish doctors NEVER perform surgery in the upper part of the back, so why make an expensive scan there?), and finally I have also visited an rheumatologist.
Occasionally the massage and the acupuncture has helped a bit, like the MANY types of painkillers also have, but…not any more! I have been eating panodil, ibuprofen, dolol, stilnoct and oxabenz/oxapax if these mean anything to you? Right now I experience some days where I can’t sit, lie or stand without having EXTREMELY HEAVY PAIN!!! This means that I am quite desperate by now, and even want to go abroad (maybe to USA?)to get a treatment, if this could help? The only good thing is that I experience some very different days, where my back is almost ok some of them.
A few days ago I found this link: www.spine-health.com/conditions/spinal-stenosis/cervical-foraminal-stenosis, where my symptoms are described PERFECTLY!!! But…when I try to search for other pages with this illness, I get some very different descriptions, where I only can relate to a few of them… Usually they mention weakness and numbness in arms and/or legs, which I don’t have! This of course confuses me, so maybe I got this all wrong? Would it be possible for anyone of you to help me find out what my problem REALLY is?
This was one reason for wanting to go abroad…and maybe have a surgery the right place, but I also have another reason:
For around 8-9 years now I have been suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)…or at least I think so… In 1991 I was diagnosed with a chronic intestine sickness. Recently I begun CFS treatment by what I heard should be one of the leading experts within this, from Norway. At least all Danish patients recommend her very highly! She says that I DO fit the conditions for CFS, but…the same symptoms could also be caused by an intestine sickness, which she doesn’t know much about. She says there is 50% chance for me suffering from CFS and 50% chance for suffering from an intestine sickness.
With one year in between I have been checked by probably THE leading place within intestine sicknesses in Denmark, and they claim that I am healthy… But…98% of the CFS patients here in Denmark agree that the Danish doctors are nothing more than a bunch of very arrogant crap! Except when I broke my arm a few times, I can’t remember when they actually DID help me? Concerning CFS they (the Danish doctors) ALL claim that this is nothing more than a psychiatric decease, which should be treated that way, combined with exercises! I recently spoke with the chairman (woman) of the Danish CFS-association, and she also suffers from an intestine decease, but also here the Danish doctors didn’t find anything… Instead she was checked by her local doctor back in the USA, and here some simple blood tests revealed some intestine sicknesses, for which she was treated, and then she got better!
That’s why I would very much like to be checked for an intestine decease in the USA somewhere by an expert within this, so that I once and for all will know whether I suffer from this…or from CFS?
I would say that a criteria for success for such a journey would be to have a thorough check-up for this intestine.thing, and then start a treatment for this, if this REALLY is the problem + be cured for my back/neck problem! This would DEFINITELY be worth quite a lot of thousand dollars… But is this realistic? I guess this depends solely upon which back/neck problem I have… A doctor/surgeon would probably want to have a look at an MR-scan of my upper-back first, which I CAN provide. If I then am lucky and have the right sickness, he could probably heal me! Or do I get this wrong?
But…what I am VERY VERY VERY curious about now, is to know about some good doctors and also to have some price examples on the treatment of various things, which COULD be my problem…
Can anyone please help me with this?

I'm very sorry to hear about all the pain you're experiencing, I can imagine just how unpleasant it must feel. If you feel that the pain is around your neck and shoulders I highly suggest you get it checked there by X-Ray, MRI, etc. If the doctors aren't bothering to check because they don't touch that area, that's a big problem. I don't understand why and how they cannot perform surgery in the upper back/neck area. Does that mean anyone with serious neck injuries are just left to suffer & die (high level injuries)?! I think you should get the area with the most pain checked and if there's something that needs fixing, your only option is to fly out and do it elsewhere.
I'm actually going to move this from the introduction section to general as it will get more views and more chances of an answer. So it looks like you've come down to either Spinal Osteoarthritis or Cervical Spondylosis.
