Hi, My brother recently suffered a SCI and is and has been hospitalized in hospital in SC ( MUSC) since January 6, 2022. His MRI identified Spinal Abscess/ Infection and Neurosurgery cleaned infection. However, he remains without lower body feelings and function? They are still treating infection and he is getting little physical therapy and his insurance is denying placement at another facility for rehab. Can anyone offer any input or help.

Nona, I am very sorry to hear of your brother's illness. Someone in the family will have to go over the insurance guidelines carefully. In addition, there should bee a social worker in the hospital who can help guide you. Some are very helpful, some are pitiful.
With such a recent injury it is possible your brother will regain some feeling and/or function. Infection will cause swelling that chokes off function of the spinal cord, but as swelling goes own, often things change. He will absolutely need access to inpatient rehab. Immediately appeal the denial (denials are almost routine in the USA insurance industry), but with an eye to having him in rehab after hospitalization after there has been time for swelling to leave. If he remains unable to move his lower body he will need rehab to learn to live in a chair. Lots of us have full lives using chairs. If he begins to see slight movement rehab can vastly improve the rate at which he advances.
Many rehab facilities seek simply to teach a person how to manage inside their home, as though our goals are to be shut-ins! You may have to fight that battle. When my dad was in rehab they wanted to discharge him saying he had stopped making progress and Medicare would not pay if he did. not make progress. I argued that he had had C-diff for month due to the facility's lax clean protocols, and no one can make progress when they are enduring week after week of sever diarrhea. Duh. He stayed. His case was a bit similar to your brother's in that he had contracted infection in yhe spinal column during surgery. He did pretty well and got back to walking with walker short distances.
Let us know how things go for him.
I step in the water, but the water has moved on...
This has been so difficult for my brother and the family.
His Docs will not say much , except that his prognosis for recovery of lower body functions is slim? I want to prove them wrong!
His injury was January 6, however, he was diagnosed with Rhabdomyolysis and during the period the medical team was managing his life support, they noticed he had no feelings/movement in lower limbs. It took some time for them to order and get him an MRI and for Neurosurgery to clean the infection and it may be that too much time had passed for his chance to recover ?
At this time he remains bedridden ( 37 days) with no change / improvement and they are still treating his infection. His lower body is swollen/edema ?
What to do and what to expect?
-Is there more medically/surgically that possibly can be done? -Are there any Spinal Rehabilitation Centers or Experts we should contact? -Since he is still in acute phase and they are treating the infection, there does not seem to be a rehabilitation place that his insurance will approve which will handle the antibiotics as well as provide him rehabilitation? -It seems that being bedridden is NOT helping his cause and lying in bed x 30-60 days with minimal rehabilitation will not help his lower body and legs ?
I am just trying to find out what we can do to help my brother?
I thank You and any others that may reply and offer guidance.
My brother who recently suffered a SCI and is and has been bedridden in hospital since January 6 and without feelings or function in lower body due to spinal infection. He had neurosurgery and they cleaned the abscess/infection and gave him a poor prognosis for recovery of limbs? I had sent MRI to outside Doc who said the images were blurred and can we get another MRI which the hospital is being difficult with? Does this sound like too much time has passed for any chance of any recovery? His albumin is 1 and he is swollen/ edema and they said he needs to increase his protein intake. They are still treating his infection with IV antibiotics. Poor guy is very depressed as expected and sees no progress and questions what happened to his life? I speak with him and try to give him hope and know he needs to speak with a counselor. Any thoughts on this situation?
I am so sorry to hear of your brothers prognosis. I suffered a spinal cord stroke on January 5, 2022. I was in the hospital for 3 1/2 weeks. I had went to work that morning and within 30 minutes I had no control of my legs.
When I first made it to the ER I could only wiggle my big toe. In the ER after several MRI's they started a very strong steroid. After administrating the steroid I was able to move my lower legs ever so slightly. I was admitted in the hospital and the very next day they started me with some therapy. I was unable to walk without 2 people, a gait belt and a walker. I have sensory loss in both of my legs from my bellybutton (spot of the infarction) down. I do however have some muscle use of my left leg and with therapy am getting some muscle in my right leg, but my right leg is very very weak.
I am still in therapy twice a week to this day and I can now walk with a cane. and when I am in my house I can walk without my cane short distances. Please let your brother know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I am sure that they have to treat the infection first but then therapy will work with him and I feel he will see major changes.
There should be someone in the hospital that should help you with the insurance/therapy. Ask for the hospital social worker.
I wish him the very best and will keep him in my prayers.
