Firstly, welcome to the forum shyfx . The spasms i have are mainly in my ankles so i doubt they have any effect on tone at all but as im a walker my tone is fine, fortunately.
The spasms i experience are generally manageable as i can manipulate my ankle back into position. I was offered baclofen by my consultant but the advice was too avoid it as it could relax my muscles too much which would then affect my upright ability.
I appreciate that spasms can improve tone so they cam be useful and for some people they prefer to tolerate the spasms. I guess it depends on what one can tolerate as to wether medication becomes an option.
I do find that stretches help and exercise although too much exercise sometimes increases the spasms
Welcome shyfx I don't have much tone other than in my legs but it's nothing a quick stretch can't fix Spasms on the other hand are just something I put up with. They're worst at night and other than having to straightening out my legs a few times during the night because of the spasms, they don't really bother me.
I know deanertheweiner has a lot of tone in his arms so maybe he has some suggestions
I have high tone. A simple irritation like an itchy nose will cause my muscles to contract like crazy and it's unvoluntary which is a pain in the butt. Any effort like standing or walking makes my tone go crazy too.
I take baklofen (muscle relaxant) and do Botox injections to manage it. Tone goes away after hard work, you just equal out the muscle imbalance by strengthening opposing muscle groups to the muscles with tone. For me my biceps are too strong so I have to strengthen my triceps to over power them. As the muscle balance evens out, the tone starts settling down. Weight bearing like standing or putting weight through your arms like using a walker to support your bodyweight settles it down too.
The paralysis resource centre provide this excellent downloadable information. It goes into a little more detail about spasticity and treatment that is available. Its very helpful and easy to read.
My large spasms are painful, so I took low dose of Baclofen--10mg/twice daily. Enough to manage, but not relax muscles so much that it limits functional mobility. Baclofen eliminated the tremoring kind of spasms, which were socially unacceptable. Exercise which pushes me to my limit and balances the muscle groups eases pain best and keeps some kind of tone.
