Has anyone who had no feeling when cathing started to experience a return of sensation? It has been almost 6 years since my injury. Have had no feeling during cathing until about 3 months ago. Starting to feel the insertion a little, as well as, the catheter hitting the bladder wall. It is just minor right now. What have others experienced? Do you get to the point where insertion and removal of the catheter is like it was when you had full feeling? I remember it being quite unpleasant. How to deal with that when cathing 5 times a day? Thanks.

Welcome derekpw, I have enough feeling to make cathing unpleasant and DJ has a similar situation. to answer your question on how do you cath 5/6 times a day with that unpleasantness, I only cath once before i go to bed. I don't reccomend this. I can sorta pee I just don't empty completely. I should be cathing more but I've been lucky so far, no UTI's. I understand it isn't healthy for your bladder or possibly your kidneys. My urologist did some labs and OK'd it for now. I may have a hyper-sensitive uretha, I might just may be a giant wimp, but I try to cath as little as possible. Some say you get used to it, I never did.
Once again Welcome and Congrats on the return. I love to hear of return after that amount of time. I'm sure many would love to have the discomfort.
Hey derekpw I initially had no sensation for the first couple months but I think I slowely started regaining it after 3 months. As kilg0retr0ut has mentioned, I have enough sensation now which makes cathing an unpleasant experience. I have never had to catheterize prior to my injury so I don't know what it felt like but I think I can imaging how it'd feel. Cathing 5 times a day is quite a bit and I admit, I really should be cathing that much per day (I currently cath twice a day) but because of the hypersensitivity, I guess I too am wimping out. Although I wear a condom catheter and void throughout the day and night, my bladder still retains about 150-200ml of urine which is probably why I always get urinary tract infections. I was also told that I'd get used to it but nearly 2 and a half years later, the only thing that improved was my slight ability to distract myself from the pain. I definitely don't regret having the sensation as I think it's a great thing despite the pain when cathing and I think it's great that you're experiencing returned sensation as well
I don't think I mentioned this anywhere but the only reason I am unable to self cath is due to my sensation. I am physically able to catheterize myself but it's the pain that makes me stop mentally. I can push the catheter in but as soon as I feel the catheter hit my sphincter and I feel the resistance, I give up.
I have about half my feeling, but here's some things I've noticed: -some catheter eyelets can tug and damage your urethra and then it is uncomfortable. I experience tug and scraping with coloplast caths, but when i use Cure caths, I can't feel it at all. -I have a spastic bladder since removing my hardware. (The hardware was dislodged and crushing my cauda equina) - my urethra is occasionally spastic, and I can't pull the Cath out all the way right away. Ouch.
I'm in the same situation as Kilg0, so cath as infrequently as I can get away with. As I said to my consultant at my last checkup, I can't understand anyone getting aroused by this, but there are some strange people out there . . .
Knight im similar to you, when i catheterize i feel about the same.
It can be real uncomfortable...i often spasm when i start to cath and this sometimes stops the flow...my sphincter tends to clamp tight often on the catheter as i go to slowly pull the catheter out after cathing...this is quite painful ...
Sorry my imput probably dosent help with your question derekpw because im almost 3 years injured now and its pretty much always been the same.
Next week i go for smear test Knight...so having loss of sensation, for once, will be an advantage (its a girlie thing guys lol)

I wish I didn't have feeling there! I had to get a biopsy yesterday and it brought me to tears!
