Oh im so pleased that you have this lighter chair, it must help so much with your painful joints.....im jealous though..i want one!
I love to be able to pick a good speed up but my chair is so basic and heavy...i so need a new one!
Lαrα, It really helps me preserve joints! Truly, if you can get an ultralight, it will change your life. Still good to have upright time as able with forearm canes--aids circulation and digestion, as well as maintaining muscles. Do you have AFOs? Can help avoid falls by addressing foot drop, and also stabilizes ankles. Highly recommend trulife.com/all-products/orthotics/ankle-foot-orthoses/carbon-composite-afo/matrix-max-1, or Matrix Max 2 if you are tough on braces. I have broken several MM1s, but prefer the greater give these offer for dancing.
lonewolf, i really hope that i get some good news this moth about my negligence case because i will certainly get a new chair, all being well
I saw my consultant at my spinal unit last week and he has referred me to see the specialist at the orthotic department so he can take a look at my feet..so maybe i will get more support soon?
If not he wants me to go on baclofen which i told him i want to avoid.
Thankyou for the link, il keep you posted to what happens with my appointment

Butiki, i struggled with transfers for months after my SCI because i damaged my wrist in my fall. It is much stronger now and transferring is better but i have to be careful. The problem was that with one wrist un usable my other wrist took a lot of the weight and i have carpel tunnel syndrome too as Lαrα did.

Ouch, sorry to hear that freewheeler! That must have limited you quite a lot but thankfully it's better now. Take care of yourself!
I need your guys' help! I use my legs to do most of my transfers. I put my feet on the floor and use my feet as a pivot point. The problem with this is when I'm transferring out of the shower, or if I have socks on a smooth floor, the floor is wet, or if my legs feel like pulling a Bambi (they cross while I transfer, then I end up on the floor). I need to relearn how to do transfers without using my legs... any tips?

I use a bath mat, its covered in a shag pile carpet stuff, otherwise I will slip,we have tiled floors throughout the house, that's only when I have no shoes on, otherwise I'm all good. My only transfers are from bed to shower chair, shower chair to bed, bed to wheelchair, wheelchair to bed, apart from car and when I'm at rehab transferring to various pieces of equipment, but then I have shoes on so no problem.
Knight are you transferring from a shower seat or a shower chair?...and have you ever used a transfer board in the past?
I have a shower bench. I have a little grass-type mat on the floor in my shower to prevent slipping, but as you all know, I'm a klutz.
LOL Knight..i fell out of my shower one time The floor was wet and i wasnt being so careful..i dont have a shower i can 'wheel' into so i use hand rails and have a seat that folds down. I now put my towel on the floor to stand on whilst i come out of the shower ..i can be pretty clumsy too lol

freewheeler, I have RA, so issues with wrist a bit different, but principle of working with a neutral wrist position is the same. If you make a fist and keep wrist relatively straight and lean on finger part of fist, it is much easier on the wrist. Try this!

Knight, Lαrα, I use a transfer board to get from shower over edge of tub to chair. This is my most vulnerable move! Be careful not to shear skin if using a board, still have to lift your body, especially when wet.

Transfer boards were my enemy in Rehab. I always sheared my butt on the darn things! I have been practicing not using my legs for transfers and I do have to say it is actually EASIER to transfer without my legs.
I'm surprised you're finding it easier Knight! It's good that you've been practicing It should be ok to use your legs a little bit so you don't hurt your shoulders
