I thought seen as this is a subject that has been popped up on recent threads that I would start a discussion up on it...so join in guys
As an incomplete i feel it a priveledge to be able to walk but we do have to consider how to maintain and preserve this mobility because there are factors that we still need to consider.
Many of us have do deal with loss of sensation, decreased muscle power and pain.
For me, personally, my issues are with having significant loss of sensation to my feet and reduced power to some muscle below injury level, i have no ankle reflexes.
I love walking but i have to consider how i can preserve my upright mobility...Muscles become fatigued and its so easy to overdo it. I dont suffer with too much pain but if i 'over walk' then i start to feel it.
Early on i would try an push my walking and then would find that the power just seemed to drain and i would be off my feet for a couple of days. So the key is to find the balance.
Its far better to maintain a manageable degree of walking with the use of aids if you need them and then use your chair. Your chair, after all, will allow you to access those days out and experiences that otherwise would be restricted to you.
There is no shame in being practical and sensible and you only need to justify what you choose to do, to yourself, certainly no one else.
I can now 'potter' about the house crutch free is im sensible and then use my crutches for outside when not walking far and then my chair for longer distances.
This way i preserve what i need to and i dont fatigued the muscles that have some power to them.
Walking is way more harder now that it ever was before. I have to use my core more to help maintain an upright gait so i am not leaning forward onto my crutches too much.
I have to watch where my feet are placed as i dont feel them much at all....i used to look down all the time but i dont tend to as much now.
Then i have to think about placing my feet correctly using a good strike..nothing is natural anymore, it takes thought, strength and care.
My weight ....im always working hard at keeping down because being overweight will affect your walking and lastly keep your exercise up that targets building up the muscles that have signal to them and make them as strong as possible.
I think that so long as we consider how to preserve our walking, it will last for as long as we need. ..chip in guys
