Many individuals who suffer with upper thoracic and Cervical Spinal Cord Injuries suffer with thermodysregulation due to autonomic dysfunction. Basically this causes a problem with regulating body temperature.
It will tend to change with the temperature around them to a more significant lever than the norm, so if the air temperature drops then the body temperature will fall and if the air temperature is very warm then the body temperature will rise.
Injury level and completeness affects the degree to which the individual is affected although those with an injury T6 and above are affected more.
This is due to the percentage of body area that is affected below injury level that has affected sensation and inability to shiver.
Its important to avoid being in cold environments for too long, especially extreme cold environments. Keep warm by layering clothes and drinking warm drinks and move to a warmer place.
There have been cases where hypothermia has been fatal.....
.Unfortunately, the autonomic dysfunction causes an inability to be able to shiver prevents and prevents the individual from increasing their body temperature.
Of course if body temp does not increase then go the the hospital....
In the same respect ..there is a similar problem with overheating due to the inability to sweat...so the body cannot cool down properly.
Flushed cheeks are often a visible sign. of overheating. The best way to bring the body temperature is to wrap a dampened wet towel around the back of the net..stay somewhere cool. Its important to add not to use heat or ice pads as they can offer too much stimuli.
Thanks Lara i found this interesting because my fibromyalgia as a similiar effect on my body heat I need to keep as cool as possible because it feels like my body thermo as no controls to it. My skin can feel cool even cold to the touch but inside i feel like i am burning up. Which in turn makes every thing feel swollen and I am unable to move. The summer is a killer for me.
But the winter can be just as bad because we have to put on the heating in the home. Right now i have been waking so sick this last few weeks due to the heat we have had to turn it off and just keep the sitting room on low. I feel sorry for my hubby But it is easier to just pull on and off an extra sweater. Now the rooms are more cooler Cold for some I can now sleep better and wake much better.
what you posted made me wonder if there was something effecting my spinal area because as you know I do have some sort of problem there. We are not sure what but it is believed nerve ends may play a part in that and i am thinking something in the spinal cord. Just a guess. But give me winter to summer any time
Great post Lαrα! My temperature regulation has definitely been affected by my injury and it really sucks. I used to like winter over summer before my accident but not anymore. Once my body gets old, it stays cold for a very long time! I hate feeling cold because it makes me feel weak. I love the summer time but if I stay out too long on extremely hot days, my body overheats. Since my brain can't send signals past the damaged spinal cord to tell my body to sweat, my body's temperature continues to increase to the point where it becomes extremely uncomfortable. Overheating is a terrible feeling but I'll take it over always feeling weak and cold!
Your welcome mo...your condition certainly sounds complex with the temperature issues. The damage to nerves that cause temperature dysfunction in individuals with a Spinal Cord Injury is specific to a damaged spinal cord at a high level injury and often a traumatic injury.
DJ..it must be quite frustrating to have to always consider this factor...especially with your extreme winters in Canada....do you feel restricted in your winter activities at all?

Usually yes but not today! I took out my power chair, attached a snow shovel to the front and plowed some snow
Hi butiki, For me i have to say you are right the temp thing is a mega pain in the butt For most who have fibro have the same body heat problem it is like the temp gage is permanently broke there is no even Stevens either boiling or freezing all year round yuk
Butiki & mo, here's how I see it. My brain is the thermostat, my body is the heating/cooling unit and my spinal cord is the wire that connects the two together. Since my spinal cord is damaged/the wire is cut, there's no signal going from the brain/thermostat telling my body what to do!

Oh tell me about it Knight...my feet dont cope with warm weather or getting warm at night...i have to hang my feet out of bed at night because they burn like crazy......otherwise they are ice cold.
They definitely get degrees warmer than the temp is or degrees colder than the temp as it fluctuates with seasons and what i wear on them...which i why i hate wearing shoes
