I'm not too sure how successful stem cell therapy will be with SCI's but we shall hope for good news.
Can stem cells help treat spinal cord injury?
Presently, post-accident care for spinal cord injury patients focuses on extensive physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other rehabilitation therapies; teaching the injured person how to cope with their disability. A number of published papers and case studies support the feasibility of treating spinal cord injury with allogeneic human umbilical cord tissue-derived stem cells and autologous bone marrow-derived stem cells. Feasibility of combination allogeneic stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury: a case report co-authored by Stem Cell Institute Founder Dr. Neil Riordan references many of them. Published improvements include improved ASIA scores, improved bladder and/or bowel function, recovered sexual function, and increased muscle control.
may i comment on stem cell research and cell therapy
No serious clinical trial to date 18/7/2013 has presented any scientific evidence that cell therapy is effective in treating the SCI condition. not even for a single individual
Please be very weary about internet posts, internet websites, news channel reporting, patient testimonials and cell clinics, may i point out that most of the latter have set up operation in countries that are sometimes not recommended for a holiday, nor fare well on human rights issues never mind health legislation, and for a reason may i say. Do your own conclusions. Currently ongoing trials will have to eventually submit, their findings to the medical community for review. Hopefully when this scientific evidence is reviewed by independent and well known researchers willing to put their reputations on line for proof of safety and efficacy and held accountable will serious gov introduce it as approved therapy. we are still very very far off or have not even begun the efficacy road yet, i am not pessimistic but pragmatic. desperation its sister the placebo effect may make us easy prey. Clinics or doctors who sell this unproven cell therapy and at high prices are breaking a universal medical code of ethics which is not to put the patient at risk.
My personal experience was to submit voluntary to a clinical trial in Switzerland, held by stem cell inc and run by Profs Armin Curt of Bulgrist univerisity hospital Switzerland. I had signed a 17 page protocol which allowed me to terminate the the process any time no questions asked. The protocol held Stem cell inc responsible for my well being, during the trial and after the trial. This was a condition set by the Swiss Gov. May i highlight what i am to say next, everything, flights for me and a partner, food, accommodation, medical care and travel was paid and in advance by stem cell inc, not only that but i was also given money for a taxi service when i arrived home. The cells used are taken from aborted fetal cells, some may have issue with this. Prior cell implantation during the one week screening tests which was for 8hrs a day for a period of one week, too many to mention them all MRI, blood samples, urine Physio, Physiologic, mental condition, EMG................... Alas i had developed a small pressure sore which resulted as infected and classified as an at risk candidate and my adventure terminated by stem cell inc. The small sore was cared to daily by nurses till my departure. I was to be immune suppessed for 10 months in order not to let my body reject foreign cells so infections, or sores would put me at risk. I don't know if this was a curse or blessing as i had mixed feelings, Cells could always turn out into a cancer although animal studies have been proven safe. The study was to held for a period of 4 years in which i was to travel to Switzerland (free of charge as explained and as per protocol) for assessment. Anyway the first Cohort of ASIA A candidates has now been done, results: the cells have not rendered side effects and concluded as safe. Efficacy Improvement, till now nill and inconclusive and an unproven report of ASIA A turning into an ASIA B. Stem cell inc is recruiting ASIA B, C and D candidates, you may find more info visiting their web site. Still the future looks bright, As Profs Armin curt explained to me personally once the safety barrier is achieved Stem Cell inc intend to change protocol, increase dosage, use Nogo inhibiters and scaffolds, maybe when a real, even if very small scientific breakthrough in cell efficacy be proven, investors and other trials will follow suit. The hopefully will set a fast track in finding our elusive cure.
Thanks for the post delboy, I too am a bit weary about the whole stem cell thing. Until it's got proven results by professional well known researchers, I'm not going to waste any money or risk my health.
