Who uses a hospital style bed and who uses a normal bed ? When I was transferred back to my local hospital from rehab in Adelaide, about 1500kms south of where I live, the O/T here wanted to get me a hospital bed for when I got home, I couldn't understand why she wanted a bed like that for me when we have a perfectly good queen size bed at home, and not very old. She told me now that I was a paraplegic I would need this style of bed. We went on a home visit to sort things out like the bathroom and ramps so I could get outside and the bed of course, I just showed her that there was no problem for me to transfer on and off our bed, but she kept insisting that because I had been in hospital and rehab for four months I would be used to a hospital bed and that I really needed one. In the end we just refused this kind offer, and I have had no problems at all with a normal bed.
Butiki, i have a hospital bed but its because i have to recline back some way to self catheter with ease. Its also great if i want to raise my legs for some time during the day as i can adjust the bed at my feet level
I have found it real useful when my continence nurse has called to a bladder scan as I can raise the bed to a comfortable level for her back too.
I can sleep in a regular bed, i do have another bedroom that has a bed in it. I use this room if i have a visitor staying as if they have an injury too i tend to give them my bedroom and bed because i can catheter on a regular bed if i have to .
Regular bed, all the way! I had the hardest time sleeping during my 2 months in medical places (hospital & nursing home). I have a Serta Plush queen that I am absolutely in love with!

Yes Knight, I think I spent enough time in an uncomfortable hospital bed, no room to move, and side rails, I'm not an old man in a nursing home, geeeeee
Rehab suggested that I also get a hospital bed and the wife did get one. I got home and told her I didn't need it and it never got setup. Regular bed with rails that attach under the mattress, these are not in the way for transfers but help me a lot.
I didn't want a hospital bed initially because I wanted to look "normal" but I'm really happy I got a hospital bed. It's a double bed with a very comfortable foam mattress. I'm actually in bed now! I love the fact that I can easily recline it to sit up. There'd be no way I could sit up comfortably for over 10 minutes without a back support because of my weak trunk. It's even helpful for transferring since I can move the entire bed up or down.
Normal bed. The thing to be concerned with a regular mattress is presure points. I have a memery foam mattress that reduces, not eliminates, presure points. I still turn every few hours. The brand I have is iComfort. Temperprdic is another, there are several out there. I went to shopping for them and transfered in and out of each one to make sure it was OK.
I know I don't have the problems like you guys do. But I do have mega back problems of a different kind and I have to agree with Andrew A memory foam mattress for me too.
Right now we have 2 adjustable twin beds in a king bed frame. It's way too low, my husband hurts his back every time he has to turn me, dress me, or whatever. So we're ordering a hospital bed. It's also much easier for me to pull myself up in bed using the built in handgrips in the headboard, too. We're going to put one of the twin adjustable beds right next to it & camouflage it a bit by hanging fabric around the headboard area.

I have the back issues too, and like what Lara said, about a room for the hospital bed , its so hard to rest it seems. And a good point of cathing there too.
