Whenever I get constipated, I usually end up with a UTI. I don't understand why. Thoughts?
I can only refer to something my continence nurse told me Knight. She told me that if the bowels are full then they pressure is put on the bladder. This makes voiding more difficult but thats generally if you are self voiding.
If you are self catheterising regular throughout the day then this should not be an issue as much? Do you get bladder spasms sometimes? If you do then a full bowel could possibly trigger bladder spasms. I get them when i self catheter quite often and when it happens i cant catheter effectively..the flow stops.
Something like this could potentially cause a UTI?
Lαrα, I do cath and rarely self void. I guess the pressure on the bladder thing makes sense. I get bladder spasms very badly, especially if I forget my Oxybutynin.
Ah this may be a factor then Knight..i take Oxybutin..is your level ok for your spasms when you take regular?
We do have a continence nurse on hand for advice via email...i could always email her for you?
I take a maximum of 30mg a day of Oxybutynin. Usually I only take 15-20mg per day. It seems to be working, but sometimes when I sleep, my bladder spasms and I leak all over my bed
I actually noticed the relation between the two myself! When my bowel routine doesn't go well I feel like I have a UTI because of the frequent urination but it must be because the bowels are putting pressure onto the bladder as Lαrα has mentioned. It sucks when you got both troubles at once but I guess it's just another joy that comes with spinal cord injuries
